Welcome to the tattoos and other forms of body-arts thread, this thread aims to fill the void, that the absence of such a thread like this creates.
Now that it has done this…
In this thread I would like to discuss tattoos and other forms of body-arts including though not limiting it to the tattoos them self’s, tattooing as a craft, piercing as a craft, I guess the holes them self’s if someone fancies that (can’t see why) success stories, maybe even horror stories, and so on and so forth. All this and more aims this thread to be here for.
So please by all means indulge us as to how this thread might concern you :)
I’ll start, I have no tattoos what so ever and the closest to any other form of body-art would be some scars from my cat.
Despite this shortcoming I have an interest for tattoos and I see my self aquiring one later on, more about this as we progress though as I have yet decided what to actually get, and there lies the heart of the issue. :P

Hmm I've been toying with the idea of getting a tattoo for a couple of years now, but I'm never sure. For a lark, I had gotten a henna tat done of the triskele above my right ankle a couple of summers ago. I liked it. It was very plain and simple. But then one day while at my hubby's family's cottage, my sister in-law who does have a tat (but hidden on her left shoulder blade area) looked at me and asked why I had it there. She's of the mind that a tat should be easily covered. So it's always left me with the idea, do I really want something permanent and if so, where the heck would I like it?
Cheers for now!...Aemma

I agree with this. I've got one tattoo on my shoulder and will be getting one above my heart soon. I don't think I'd ever get one that couldn't be covered by a short sleeve shirt. For me a tattoo is more of a magic sigil than a work of art and I'm loathe to share that art with the vulgar masses.

In my younger, wilder days, I was a biker. (yes, really. :) )
And among my peers almost everyone had tattoos and piercings. Now I`m older, and have to say that time and aging isn`t kind to the body that bears tattoos or piercings. ;)
In times past, folks got tattoos as part of ritual or some initiatory issue. They generally were not inked simply because they were pretty, and I suspect the bulk of celebreties following the cult of the painted body will come to regret their choices as they age and skin sags, wrinkles and ink itself fades and bleeds, blurring into a dark mass.
I personally believe that if you have a tattoo, it should have some kind of sacred meaning. Or at the very least, be akin to those in centuries past which belonged to particular groups of people, like fishermen and sailors...many fishermen even today bear inks that are almost protective charms against drowning, or which identify their vocation.
When I was young, I also knew many prisoners who, on being let out, acquired specific tatts which identified their time inside.
Bikers used to have quaint tatts such as pinup girls, their favourite bike, or something which identified their bike group. Nowadays though they all seem to go for `tribal`, which, imo, they aren`t really entitled to, it isn`t part of their heritage, and it`s a fad, that`s all.
Same with Chinese lettering, don`t see the point of that.
I`ve seen a few friends become seriously ill by using unreputable tatt artists, dirty needles and bad inking practice leading to septicemia. Also seen tatts scar over and become disfigured. Contrary to popular belief, they can`t be easily removed and when they are, the scar from the laser removal remains in place of the tatt.
I don`t have any. :) Did toy at one time of having a tiny Scots thistle done, on a thigh or upper arm, but then took another look at some of my aging biker friends and changed my mind.
There`s nothing wrong with my unadorned skin. :)
But I do recognise a long and respectable heritage concerning tattooes and even piercings (all I say to those are `ouch`, bugger that!`)
and have seen over time some beautiful examples, like one of the island fishermen here who has a viking woman on his lower back beneath a Western dragon with wings spread out, and various others over his body including his prison and sailing tatts.
He`s getting on a bit now though, so his earliest ones, done with older inks, are faded and have bled one into the other so from a distance just look like an untidy undefined black mess.
Seen lots of celebrities with tattooes, none of them really appealing and they do tend to stick them where they can`t be covered, so when they dress for an elegant event they look kind of..well...scruffy...with tattooed limbs or necks.
I do like tattooes in general though, and would say to anyone considering one, remember how your body changes as you age, find a good, reputable (and probably expensive) tattooist, for cheaper inks fade over time, and put it somewhere you can easily cover, like the small of the back, hip or back of the shoulder.
And avoid the really tacky ones ;)

Well I'm currently for over 70% inked, including facial tattoos...
Since I'm a tattoo-artist It doesn't form big problems in life...
In my case, tattoos is a lifestyle.

I would never get a tattoo only because the looks of it, I mean that a tattoo can be good-looking and such, but shouldn't be placed purely for that. I myself have a Algis rune tattoed on my back:) And I'll get Mjollnir on my chest:)

Tattoos and choices in, comes in all sorts and shapes... You got ofcourse the statement tattoos, but most people get inked merely to decorate their body...
As a tattooist I like the decorative tattoos a whole lot more, because they often are timeless considering the designs...

Well, of one turn the coin a little, one can allways say that the decorative is a meaning in itself. If someone like their looks better with a tattoo, then there's some meaning in it. Now, I don't know how well Miami Ink. reprecents the life of a tattooist, but it seems that most people who come in there have some meaning in their tattoo, like a dragon for power, a tattoo of their dog and so on. How is this comparing to yours work?

Have you ever in that show seen ink created without a deeper background to it? I haven't and I saw all seasons.
When I was a tattooist for the rightwing classes here in the Netherlands all I created was statement work... Now that I have spread my wings, I'm confronted with a whole lot of people who want tattoos purely to decorate their body's...
I believe the last statement tattoo I did was comrade Stossy's "faceless Enemy" and thats close to a year ago...
Times have changed and the tattooingbusiness has simply changed with it as society did... Tattoos have become more accepted so instead of getting something that can easely be hidden, people go for big decorative work...

I'm fairly tattooed. 1 leg sleeve, 1 arm sleeve, a chest piece and my neck. I only have decent photos of my neck and chest:
http://i128.photobucket.com/albums/p200/danjakecapp/Miscellaneous/dragonChest.jpg
http://i128.photobucket.com/albums/p200/danjakecapp/Miscellaneous/wolfNeck2.jpg
My tattoos mainly represent my interests and beliefs. For example, I have 2 ravens in my arm sleeve (a nod to Woden's Hugin and Munin) and a banner saying "reflect, remain" - something I made up which means that if you reflect upon your actions and character, you'll remain someone proud and admirable. My wolf represents my love for wolves and because (like many Germanics and preservationists) I feel an affinity for the wolf character - they usually mate for life, are loyal, misunderstood, shunned by society and wild. The dragon on my chest has 2 crossed swords and a shield. It simply represents my admiration for the warrior spirit and the dragon is there because it's so inextricable from British (Celtic + Germanic) folklore and myth.

Talking about body-modifications... This gentleman has been scarred...
Scarification is something me and my GF are deeply interested in, since it is one of the populair styles from this day and age...
Ofcourse there are more extreme forms of body-modification, like amputation and tonguesplitting, branding and eyeball-tattooing, but this I really like this form...
Thats why I chose this particulair picture and context.:p

eyeball-tattooing,
:eek: EEEEEEEEEEEEEKKKKKKKKK! What!? Why? Oh...gods..ouchouchouch....:icon_eyes::runs:
That surely HAS to be dangerous! Speaking as someone who has a degenerative eye condition that will have me registered blind in my old age, I can`t conceive of anyone willingly tampering with something so delicate....
I know things like piercing, even body mutiliation (though I have a very high pain threshold, I wouldn`t chase it willingly, thanks ;) ) and things like teeth filing etc have had a place in cultures the world over, I often wonder if the people getting such extreme things done consider that their views might, just might, change in the future and they would regret such decisions later...and some of these procedures sound either irreversible or at least, hugely expensive if they can be reversed....
but EYEBALL tattooing...?
Urk, sitting here with shivers at the thought...
ok, call me a wimp, I don`t care! Ick..:p :D

I know there`s a tradition of adorning human bodies since man first walked the earth,...but I`d rather find fairly pain free, less permanent ways to do so. ;)
reason...I`m a woman, thus always changing my mind :D
I wear occasionally, coloured contacts..my own eyes are grey/blue, I have black ones and yellow wolf ones, plus lizard ones, and have dyed my hair, the most disastrous time being when I misread the instructions for henna, left it on for three hours and spent the following six months glowing in the dark with fluorescent orange hair....
The only things I have pierced are my ears, having watched a friend need surgery after a pierced navel turned septic. Been around folks with tatts all my life though (dad has the SNP symbol on his arm and an image of his first girlfriend on his back, which pleased my mum...not his first girlfriend, a great deal...;) so am used to those, but the scarring thing just looks like a great deal of pain and I`m willing to bet the laddie with Freak on his arm may want it gone in a few years time ;)
But, each to their own, and my view is so long as they aren`t hurting anyone else by it, good luck to them.
Still, yick on the eyeball tattooing though!
Edited to add, also dyed my hair black...I`m naturally dark gold blonde, so black hair with pale blonde eyebrows and lashes just looked bloody silly. See? Best not getting anything too permanent imo ;)

Then i like this one better.
It is of all times for people to wear jewelry. Earrings, make-up and more recently tattoos and piercings are accepted forms of body cosmetics. Surprisingly, no jewelry is available for the organ that is most important in social interactions, the eye."
—NIIOS, Cosmetic Extraocular Implant PR
It is now possible to place an eyeball implant into the surface of the white of the eye. Not only is it possible, but, at least in the Netherlands (where euthanasia is also allowed), it is a legal procedure offered by eye clinics under the brand name JewelEye.
From the Netherlands Institute for Innovative Ocular Surgery's website:
In 2002 the Netherlands Institute for Innovative Ocular Surgery developed an implant that can be implanted within the superficial, interpalpebral conjunctiva. The implant does not interfere with the ocular functions, ie the visual performance and motility. The implant is made of a specially designed material that can be molded in all kinds of desired shapes and sizes.
Current shapes available include:
Heart
Star
Eurosign
Four-leaved clover
Music note
Specifics
Eyeball Implant
(Michael Kooren/Reuters)Gerrit Melles, the director of the Netherlands Institute for Innovative Ocular Surgery which developed the procedure two years ago says,
In my view, it is a little more subtle than (body) piercing. It is a bit of a fun thing and a very personal thing for people. Without doing any harm to the eye, we can implant a jewel in the conjunctiva. So far, we have not seen any side effects or complications, and we don't expect any in the future.
The jewelry itself is of a platinum alloy about 1/8" across, and having it inserted is done under a local anesthetic starting at about $750. The procedure takes about 15 minutes. As of this entry's writing, seven implants of this type have been performed, and the clinic claims to have a waiting list of people wanting more.
At this stage, JewelEye implants are only available in the Netherlands, where the jewelry can only be implanted by a registered ophthalmologist (under sterile conditions, of course).

I don't think any of the extreme stuff is really for me but I have meaning to get a tattoo for quite some time now. I just can't decide what to get!! I'd like to get something along the lines of the shape of New Zealand however this seems to be a bit of a trend at the moment and I want something original. They also have a tendancy to have maori designs involved as well which I'm not that keen on for obvious reasons! Might have to sit down and have a bit of a play on paper one day :)

I have seven tattoos and plan on many more. I feel incomplete at this time.
There's not much philosophy on them for me, I just like the way they look. I'm not one of those people who is obsessed with getting them and I don't particularly care what they mean. I just like the art.
I don't watch tattoo TV shows and don't gawk over others tattoos. Most of the time, I don't even see tattoos as I'm so accustomed to my own that it just appears as skin to me.

Took it out later on, went back and had it done again!! Freaking moron  Went through that bullshit again just to take it out barely a year later and never wore again! Tattoos and piercings ARE body modifications. If you have a tattoo or a piercing then you have joined the ranks of those with body mods. :p
I'd get more done but every time I come home with something else, it frightens The Man over into a corner for a while. This summer, if I have the cash - because right now it's more a money issue than anything else - I might get some more work done on my left arm.

Can 'antis' post in this thread, or is there a better place for that? :P I personally am extremely saddened when I see a beautiful female body 'marred' as I would put it, by a tattoo. If it were the reserve of certain subcultures, I'd just ignore it, but it's getting nigh on universal. I feel the same about piercings too. A tattoo often just reminds me of a scab or blemish. :( I care rather less about what men do to themselves, but would still be rather 'standoffish' with a man who'd gone overboard in this regard, beyond the rather more traditional arm decorations.

Not really, I have it for 7 years now and perhaps it is a little bit more vague then the first year, but it still looks like on the pic I posted.

I have gotten beauty marks tattooed on my forearm. They work, and I tell you, I get so many complements. I just can't live without social recognition!

I currently have my nose, tongue and ears pierced. There are a few more I'd consider getting, but I'm gonna wait until the memory of a horribly painful swollen tongue fades.
I'm also considering getting a tattoo, but that's one I need to really think about! I've never really wanted one before but now I'm thinking it might look cool.
