‘Empty New York’, Photos of New York City in the 1960s Taken When No One Was Around (http://laughingsquid.com/empty-new-york-photos-of-new-york-city-in-the-1960s-taken-when-no-one-was-around/)

“Empty New York” (http://www.dcmooregallery.com/exhibitions/2014-04-24_duane-michals-empty-new-york#works_8) is a series of photos shot by photographer Duane Michals (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Duane_Michals) in 1964 that capture a variety of spots New York City taken when no other people were present. The photos, which were inspired by the work of French photographer Eugene Atget (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Eug%C3%A8ne_Atget), were shot early on Sunday mornings, before people take over the streets.
It was a fortuitous event for me [to discover the work of Eugene Atget in a book]. I became so enchanted by the intimacy of the rooms and streets and people he photographed that I found myself looking at twentieth –century New York in the early morning through his nineteenth-century eyes. Everywhere seemed a stage set. I would awaken early on Sunday mornings and wander through New York with my camera, peering into shop windows and down cul-de-sacs with a bemused Atget looking over my shoulder.
The photos recently appeared as an exhibit at the DC Moore Gallery (http://www.dcmooregallery.com/) in Manhattan.
