Predominant ethnic groups by region in Europe

This map was created based on the latest Y-DNA data (http://www.eupedia.com/europe/european_y-dna_haplogroups.shtml) combined with physical and historical evidence. Names on the map are not necessarily ethnic groups but culturo-linguistic or historical ones. Colours are more indicative of the ethnic similarities and differences between regions.

I posted this on Skadi but everyone seems interested in other things.
-----------------
The Cosmographia by Sebastian Münster (1488 – 1552) from 1544 is the earliest German description of the world.

It had numerous editions in different languages including Latin, French (translated by François de Belleforest), Italian, English, and even Czech. The last German edition was published in 1628, long after his death. The Cosmographia was one of the most successful and popular books of the 16th century. It passed through 24 editions in 100 years. This success was due to the fascinating woodcuts (some by Hans Holbein the Younger, Urs Graf, Hans Rudolph Manuel Deutsch, and David Kandel). It was most important in reviving geography in 16th century Europe.

His first geographic works were Germania descriptio (1530) und Mappa Europae (1536). In 1540 he published a Latin edition of Ptolemy's Geographia with illustrations. The 1550 edition contains cities, portraits, and costumes. These editions, printed in Germany, are the most valued of the Cosmographias.

I like how almost the entire Italian peninsula is practically dark-eyed, even more so than Greece and Turkey.

A map I've just seen on the knowledge level of English by the teens of some European countries. Actually, it's about the % of 14/15 year-old teenagers who can maintain a conversation in the language. Although the map seems to be 'own work' here, the data are based on a recent Eurobarometer (EU surveys).

(I'm surprised to see France % lower than the Iberian. I wonder if the teens just lied.) :p

Thats not so strange, since France protects very much the french language, and at the same time they usually have a big lobby to boycott the english as international language...

Yeah, I'm aware of that, I didn't expect it to be a high percentage in France either. But from personal impression, I'd have said France would be slightly over Iberia, maybe at 34% or so. Never at 14%!

I expected Portugal to be a little bit higher too.

I was going to post it in the How would you redraw the European borders thread, but it'd have got quickly lost in the middle of those endless boring Balkan wars. :rolleyes2:
