Oh, when I clicked on this thread I thought you meant actual flowers.

Well here goes anyway: Finland's national flower is lily of the valley (Convallaria majalis):

The thistle has been the national emblem of Scotland since the reign of Alexander III (1249–1286) and was used on silver coins issued by James III in 1470. According to the legend, an invading Norse army was attempting to sneak up at night upon a Scots army encampment. During this operation one barefoot Norseman had the misfortune to step upon a Scots Thistle, causing him to cry out in pain, thus alerting Scots to the presence of the Norse invaders. Some sources suggest the specific occasion was the Battle of Largs, which marked the beginning of the departure of the King Haakon IV (Haakon the Elder) of Norway who, having control of the Northern Isles and Hebrides, had harried the coast of the Kingdom of Scotland for some years

I believe this is the Swedish national flower, Linnaea borealis (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Linnaea). Sorry, Swedes, for posting this. It is just that we named our daughter, Linnea Valerie. We love the name Linnea. We also love the flower. (I have visited Carl Linneaus' homestead which gave me the idea of the name too.)

Our state (Maryland) flower is the Black-eyed Susan:

Isn't the rose generally a symbol of England? I mean an ordinary rose. I'd always thought of it as a national symbol, but I suppose it could just be a development of the tudor rose's status as an English symbol.

The Tudor Rose of Henry VII was designed to symbolise the reconciliation of the rival royal Houses of York and Lancaster after the 'Wars of the Roses'. The Yorkist rose is white, while the red is from my Lancashire;

You can buy a variety under the name of 'Lancashire' here, and I think it looks very attractive;

Just like what Osweo pointed out:
The Tudor Rose was the merger of Yorkist (http://www.woodworksecrets.com/graphics/yorkshire-rose-ongray.gif) and Lancastrian(http://www.browfarm.co.uk/info_images/lancashire_rose_small.gif) roses.
Although I read (can't remember where though) that this idea of "Tudor" rose was nothing but a propaganda tool meant to conciliate the Houses of York and Lancaster. And that the so-called "War of the Roses" was actually fought under the banners of Saint George and of the Welsh Dragon.

Aye. King Henry VII married the Yorkist heiress Princess Elizabeth. See in the margins of this map of Lancashire; 'Blessed Are The Peacemakers!'

'Nothing but' is over cynical. Henry VII didn't have to put the white in there, but he did.

And that the so-called "War of the Roses" was actually fought under the banners of Saint George and of the Welsh Dragon.
:ohwell:
I'm inclined to see that as rather unlikely. I have read that the rival Houses weren't quite so firmly linked to the rose symbols as was taught later, and that nobody would have known at the time that they were living during the 'Wars of the Roses', but I can remember nothing of any detail.
