McDonald's is no longer the world's largest restaurant chain. That honor now goes to Subway.

The sandwich giant just passed the golden arches in terms of number of locations, according to the Wall Street Journal (http://online.wsj.com/article/SB10001424052748703386704576186432177464052.html?m od=e2tw). Subway had 33,749 restaurants open worldwide at the end of 2010.

McDonald's had just 32,737 locations open by the same point, the corporation disclosed in SEC filings.

According to the WSJ (http://online.wsj.com/article/SB10001424052748703386704576186432177464052.html?m od=e2tw), the chain just opened its 1000th location in Asia, and sees international growth as the future.

Subway, which opened its first international restaurant in 1984, in Bahrain, expects its number of international restaurants to exceed its domestic ones by 2020, says Don Fertman, Subway's Chief Development Officer. The chain currently has just over 24,000 restaurants in the U.S., where it generated $10.5 billion of its $15.2 billion in revenue last year.

The $5 dollar footlong did a lot to fuel Subway's recent growth, according to Bloomberg (http://www.msnbc.msn.com/id/33724962/ns/business-bloomberg_businessweek/), and spending a large amount on advertising while rapidly opening shops using a franchise model similar to McDonald's has allowed them to grow quickly.

But don't be surprised if McDonald's comes battling back. The fast-food giant also has a keen eye for international growth, and expansion in Asia, including India.

Well Subway is a lot healthier.

And tastes better, IMO.

I must be the only person that has never set foot in, ordered in or eaten the produce of Subway.

It doesn't attract me in the slightest. I'd prefer it to disappear off of high streets, and indeed the world altogether.

In terms of taste there is no comparison really. Although I'm sure Subway's quality is equally as suspect.

Well there are only 3 food establishments within walking distance of my work: KFC, McDonalds, and Subway.

If I forget my lunch, Subway wins every time.

I miss Texas where you could get avocado on your sub. Om nom nom!

There was one just by the mall here but it got shut down over some bullshit property rights and so I have to drive the extra mile to eat at one now.

I suppose this is good news if for no other reason than because it gets a bit tiresome observing the quite absurd discussions of McDonalds as if its spread globally surpasses Communist expansion, bubonic plague, and jihadist bombers as catastrophes afflicting the West. This will tend to mute that slightly.

This proves that Jared the clown is sexier than Ronald the clown. :)

If I am in the mood for a submarine sandwich, and have time to kill ordering the damn thing, (Subway takes forever and is always packed at lunch), I would chose Quiznos or Schlotzsky's over subway.

Quizno's sucks, the bread is stale-ish the the sandwich contents subpar compared to Subway

I had Jimmy John's this weekend for the first time, not bad, and delivery at 2 AM is always a good thing
