View Full Version : Bandwidth outing
Apologies for the 10 minutes or so that we were offline - we have exceeded our bandwidth allocation for the first time ever. I have sorted that out, and we now have a much larger allocation.
This is because Apricity's traffic has steadily been increasing over the past year. In fact it is more than twice it was a year ago.

How much does Apricity need to be "funded" and how does one contribute?

Support the Apricity (http://www.theapricity.com/forum/forumdisplay.php?f=73) - very straight forward.

Well I've been paying everything out of my own pocket for about the last year. Funding has sort of dried up long ago. Most people just fund once anyway.

I do want to donate to help a bit with BW costs and I probably will later on.

Ok, can someone give me some straight-forward and honest background regarding the SNPA? I know the site is screaming "apolitical! apolitical!" but that doesn't mean there isn't a Nordicist tone to the thing... I'd love to contribute to The Apricity (I can give about $10 without missing the money), but I'm a little wary about supporting this SNPA thing.

Do you pay for those costs in pounds or dollars? Just wondering because the dollar is not as strong as the pound. I still remember paying $200/100quid for a taxi trip from Gatwick airport to a hostel in Kilburn. :tsk:

Why so? It is a great general source for classical physical anthropology and not that much of a Nordicist site since it was revised latest in most respects.
Especially the glossary and excerpts are highly valuable.

To be honest, it's not really about the SNPA at all. That's just a little fancy thing appearing in the title that some people like, because we host the SNPA. But the SNPA is not Apricity, it is just a resource that we happen to host. We don't necessarily agree with or disagree with it.
The funding doesn't have anything to do with the SNPA in reality. It has to do with maintaining the server costs hosting this forum. The SNPA is probably not even 1% of the total resources required.

Doesn't really matter, the exchange rate fluctuates but not that much. Both sterling and USD are hard currency.

And that's the answer I'm looking for. How much will $10US do to sustain Apricity? How much is the yearly bandwith cost? I can put aside some cash and contribute $20 next month or $30 in June. $5-10 a month is my max on affordability though.

Thank you very much. :) Every little helps - if several members donate such amounts it all adds up.
The server costs are around $1,500 per year, but I expect it to increase because of our more intensive requirements now as the site is growing. And, we are already on a special price which is probably not going to be maintained.

The difference is within the British goods costing more for Americans. I remember paying for everything twice the regular price tag in UK because of the exchange rate. For example, one time I decided to have a meal at a Burger King in the city and my order should have cost me around $8 to purchase but instead cost me $16 because of the exchange rate. And paying $16 for fast food... I might as well have dined at a quality restaurant instead. It'd be like you coming over to the states and paying 16 quid for a fast food meal in NYC.
I suppose the difference isn't really noticed for British inhabitants since they earn money in pounds rather than the US dollar. I spent way too much money in just a week on so few things so I was like fuck this, I'm not spending a cent more on goods that cost twice the normal value.
My concern, is that if I decide to donate 5 quid on your donate thingy I end up donating 8 dollars which means I lose three dollars because of the exchange rate.

Alright so I've given $10.25. Now what happens?

Loki, for Christ's sake, you're hosting articles by Carl O. Nordling, a known extremist Svekoman, who, among other funny things thinks that the name of 'Tavastians' (hämäläiset) stems from 'Retards' (hölmöläiset). :D:D
Magister's considerations are more than founded.

I doubt however, that one can sum a whole work by such a naive speculation and the original sources are always nice to have, since many people talk about them, without having actually read them...
What I have to confess if it is about Svekoman :thumb001:

It's not "naive speculation" to call a spoon a spoon. ;)
But anyway, I seem to have been mistaken: there's just one article by him in SNPA, and for the second look I can't claim it to be biased - at least noticeably so. That, however, doesn't change my opinion of SNPA being somewhat a politically motivated project - whatever the authors are claiming.
Anyway, I'm not implying there should be any form of censorhsip for the site for any reason. That's the least thing I want from my online information sources.
