The most beautiful are Ingrid Bergman, Audrey Hepburn, Claudia Cardinale, and Brigitte Bardot.

One that was forgotten on the list is Vivien Leigh:

I had her in mind, as some others I expect to be added too by posters. Good choice. :)

I voted Elizabeth Taylor, Grace Kelly and Gene Tierney.

You have an excellent taste, sir.

The most talented are definitely Katharine Hepburn and Ingrid Bergman. Audrey Hepburn is timeless and I think Claudia Cardinale, Natalie Wood and Grace Kelly are all classic beauties.

However my favorite is probably Jane Fonda. I've always thought she was so beautiful, in a really underrated way. Barbarella is a sex goddess to me

Rita Hayworth is definitely in the top three or so. I was just watching Giant the other day and I must say that Elizabeth Taylor is very overrated. (imo)

I never understood what people said when they refer to someone as looking like a "classic beauty", does this mean they resemble the classic beauties? Or they carry the refined features/timeless features of one?

Debaser11

They seem to use either interpretation interchangably.

1. Audrey Hepburn
2. Lauren Bacall
3. Grace Kelly
4. Sophie Loren
5. Elizabeth Taylor

Audrey is nr. 1, an equal measure of beauty and cutness, so she gets my vote.

Well, the title was for the sake of brevity. A more proper might be: Beautiful actresses of the classic era. Although, as you say, classic beauty is also used to refer to refined feminine beauty in opposition to more peculiar androgynous beauty that's been so in fashion in recent decades.

Sure, but let's not be that cruel! :p

Being famous means you're exposed to the whole world, and people see how you get old. On the other hand, the films where you were in your prime are there for everyone to see once and again too, so that your beauty remains immortal.

I've never got what the deal with Audrey Hepburn is (I guess I'm not supposed to? :P) - sure she's 'refined' looking and smart, but I just don't get it that she's considered so 'beautiful' (winning this poll even!) ahead of other 'beauties' I think she's verging on plain TBH! :embarrassed

for me the best is Veronica Lake, always. Suprised only 1 other voted for her. I also voted for Jane Fonda (her niece Bridget looks great too!) and Natalie Wood (her daughter Natasha looks great too!).

Worst for me would be Jayne Mansfield, she had a great body but fake bleached hair and hideous, caked makeup which actually makes me feel a little queasy. :puke:
The (semi?-famous) pic of her (looking completely fake) with her daughter (au naturale and looking very different!) show what i mean, I think

I actually think that Audrey Hepburn is the antithesis of the definition of "classic beauty" so it's quite ironic that she's polling #1. The term "classic beauty" means "perfect", "standard" and "archetypical". In the 40's 50's you have classic beauties like Ingrid Bergman, Rita Hayworth, Elizabeth Taylor, Grace Kelly and Ava Gardner. Audrey Hepburn was the exact opposite of this kind of conventional beauty. She was gamine and pixie and boyish. I think her beauty is so alluring because it is the opposite of this classic notion of beauty with perfect symmetry and proportions which makes up most of Hollywood's batch. She represented a new breed of sex symbols, she was more attainable and down to earth and casual then the sex spots and kittens like Marilyn and Brigitte. She really spearheaded that casual, natural, gamine and bohemian quality in female stars and influenced so many girls in the 60's and on like Twiggy.

I sort of agree. By this title, though, I simply meant Beauties from films of the so-called classical period.

I would have to go with Grace Kelly. Seeing her for the first scene in Rearview Window almost caused a physical response.

It would be interesting to compare the faces of women from older movies with those of modern movies, and see how the tastes have changed. What have been all of your observations of this?

Let's see.

These are well-known European actresses of different types from the last decades which have been considered beautiful at some point by several sources. Which of them could be seen as 'classic' and which would be unmistakably 'modern'?
