View Full Version : Spam @ Skadi
What's going on there? Seems like roughly 40% of the visited members of the day are spam registrations (the grey ones who are banned).

Strange indeed. For some reasons, I've posted more messages in one month on Apricity than in 4 years on Skadi. Seems this forum isn't as interesting for me as what QF and Loki created.

...spam registrations (the grey ones who are banned).how would those new registrants be deemed unacceptable?
how would those new registrants be deemed unacceptable?
It's fairly easy to recognise spam registrations (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Spambot) by their profile contents, and the messages that they will [attempt to] post. These come to advertise things like penis enlargements, cheap viagra, or digital cameras.

if such a device (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Spambot#Forum_spambots) were intentionally aimed at a forum,
if sufficiently burdensome to the administration -
it might be considered an attack (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Forumwarz#Gameplay).

If Skadi was to merge here, I'd run away as fast as I could :D They couldn't tolerate our friendliness or our funniness ...Skadi= serious buisness :rolleyes2:
Stirpes wouldn't work for them either, but that I can understand.
It is unfortunate they ran off all their good people but it is fortunate because we all landed here, and its better by far.

Still flogging dead horses, are ya, dear Mrs. Lyfing? :D You'd think that after establishing yourself here with no formal ties to many people over at Skadi, you'd sort of lose a bit of obsession with us after like 3-4 months, ya know. :wink

Alas, this is the only thing that one can do against all these Spam Accounts. You can bet we aren't thrilled about all the spambots registering, but if you have a more effective way of dealing with them than banning/deleting them on sight, you're welcome to suggest one. :thumbs up
Half of the spam-bots that still show up have also been banned aeons ago, but it seems to be in their programming that they keep on coming back to try and post more of their spam, but obviously are prevented due to their "account inactive" status. *shrugs*

Same could be said for Skadi. Or should that be "another forum" by default?

Here's my suggestion: upgrade to the latest vBulletin version. Skadi is still running on 3.6.11, and hence the outdated forum software has inferior spam-combating capabilities. One of the fine new features of vBulletin 3.7 and 3.8 is increased protection against spam. I'm sure Forseti would be able to fork out $60 to renew his vBulletin licence in order to download an upgrade, it's not that much.

Oh Sigurd, same ole tricks different day huh...Well, I'm glad you try to agitate me but it doesn't work anymore. Other than that I am simply a bit bored at the moment so I will give you some time of my day only for that reason.
Replying to a thread isn't flogging dead horses Sigurd. Flogging the dead horse as you call it would be if I was in this thread going on about my membership at Skadi or rather lack of.
The last thing anyone seems to obsessed with these days is Skadi forum. Ya'll made that sandwich and now you guys are eating it. Sorry ...or wait...I'm not sorry but rather disappointed.
The only forum I am obsessed with would be this one here. :} I signed up as Juliet on Skadi simply for laughs and as myself just to give such a boring forum a moment of excitement.
The only other thing I have to say on this topic is the proof is in the pudding. And the pudding is TA. Everyone has came here. Enough Said.

As far as I am aware, the vBulletin licence is active (as some Mods/Hacks were added as recent as a few months ago), however I remember that at the time of the merge, we originally downgraded from an early 3.7 version (late The Althing) to 3.6.11 (upon Skadi resurrection) by choice.
Beyond that, of course, it remains to be questioned whether even with such an update, the spam-bots would stay out altogether, as Skadi enjoys a lot of non-membership traffic: On Nordfolk we were running on 3.5.4 until a few months ago and never had any issues with spam. So I suppose beyond the software's protection it would only be a matter of time until they found a way around it again.
Other than that - it is not up to me to have a say in matters concerning forum software, and this would of course have to be in the hands of the ownership. Not last because even if I were in a position to decide upon forum upgrades, I would keep my fingers off it for my personal utter lack of technical knowledge. :wink

No, far from it. If I wanted to agitate you I'd be lecturing you in full length. You know that full well. I was just, in a mild moment of bored curiosity wondering as to why you still seem to care when you profess you don't. It's a Wednedsay evening, so I'm just as bored as you are. :wink

Skadi is a public forum, so you wouldn't have needed to register. Other than that, you could be Odin himself and you still wouldn't be allowed a double account. Believe me, I tried that when the TNP database merged into Skadi and wished to keep my TNP and Skadi accounts separate. In short: The rule for double accounts applies to all.
The only other thing I have to say on this topic is the proof is in the pudding. And the pudding is TA. Everyone has came here. Enough Said.
Well, glad you like it here. As they say, there's a forum for everyone. For you this may be TA, for someone else this may be Skadi, and yet for someone else this may even be PANF. There's something in the fridge for everyone, so if you prefer it here, I'm not one to say you can't. :thumbs up
Same could be said for Skadi. Or should that be "another forum" by default?
No, dear Wat, I believe its application here would rather lead the purpose out of the "How did you find out about Apricity" thread ad absurdum. Anyone learning of this place from Skadi, would be called to specify from which "another forum" they learnt about this place. A reply being, "I was invited from another forum" would kind of look a bit odd, don't you think? :wink

Don't worry, we at Skadi have more of a reputation for swallowing other forums. Aryan Dawn + Pantheon Europa + Skadi + Blut und Boden + The Nordish Portal + The Althing = Skadi database. :wink

True, but perhaps He who is subtle enough to let it go unnoticed for all eternity perhaps deserves the undercover doubleness. We're not the Gestapo. :tongue

Exactly. Opinions are like arseholes: Everyone has one, and is entitled to one to be able to function properly. :thumbs up
World would be a boring place if everyone had the same opinion. Would lead philosophy ad absurdum, too, BTW. :D

Such steps are never taken lightly, but that doesn't matter, or at least shouldn't matter. If that's how we handle things, then that's how we handle things. Different place, different approach. :)
Instead, if Apricity can prosper without being mentioned at Skadi, then this should be a source of pride to you. Perhaps thus you should see things a little more pragmatic and less bitter: Depending on how you handle it, a curse can always be a blessing in disguise. :wink
And whether you wish to see it as a blessing or a curse, that is entirely up to you and your compatriots here. With that issue in place, the ball is entirely in your court. :)

I feel pride in the Apricity and all that it has achieved in its short time already. It has surpassed many other forums currently within our sphere, and looks to be getting more gargantuan.
But with Skadi my only gripe is the bitterness with which you lot have dealt with us.
The deletion of our forum name speaks more about Skadi than it does us.

Sigurd, what is up with the "miserable user" hack that Skadi has implemented against Apricity members who had been Skadi regulars? This feature involves a <1/3 probablilty of getting the right page.

This is none of my repertoire, and I have no knowledge of it being used in a long time and doubt its use, especially its widespread use. In either circumstance, re-arranging membership of usergroups is not a Moderator matter, it is an Administrator matter, you should know this being a Mod yourself.
I was not briefed upon such a matter, so I could not tell you one way or the other, best to inquire with the administration. Just because I amongst the more active of Skadi Staff here, doesn't mean I am its voice on TA.

Indeed, that is a modification that should be applied to a given member by an administrator. So the only ones who could do that would be Freidenkerin and Forseti. Because of the controversial and potentially embarrassing nature of its application, I would imagine this would not be shared with the lower staff.

The problem began the day after I became a mod here. It also happened to several other mods. I did inquire of skadi's administration and I got no answer but noticed that right after my inquiry the problem was extended from my user name to my IP, so I cannot easily get to my own old posts even if I try to browse as a guest.
I bring this up so that maybe you might understand the kind of tactics that Skadi is currently engaging in at some level that are are not exactly helping its reputation, and which may account for some of the attitudes you may find on this site toward Skadi.

30% of all men know that their penis is too short, and have come to terms with that. The other 70% are still in the honest, but erroneous belief that there is something wrong with the ruler. I'm proud to count myself amongst the former group. :wink
PS: Careful - German humour involved. :D
Here (http://www.vbulletin.org/forum/showthread.php?t=208088) is a new modification that apparently can see whether a new registrant is a bot, and then blocks it. Should help Skadi. They say it works on older versions too.

Speak for yourself. I'm quite happy with my appendage. ^_^
No, that's an old joke. We always get told about the mythical 9 inches (=25cm). 99.5% of men fall short of that. Ron Jeremy doesn't.
All men should know that these 9 inches are mythical. 30% of men accept that they fall just a little short of 9 inches and are happy with what they have. 70% of men claim they fulfil that requirement but know they don't and claim they're "hung like a horse" but that their ruler is malfunctioning.
As such, I count myself amongst the 30% who are happy with what they have. That's the point behind the joke. 70% have an inferiority complex because they don't believe "what the ruler told them" (i.e. that they're really shorter than they claim), the other 30% know they fall short of the mythical 9 inches, are honest about it whether it's 4 inches or 8.99 inches, and are happy with what they have. :wink
EDIT: Oh lol, I'm an idiot. You thanked my post. Good to see you're also amongst these 30%. Welcome to the club, it's definitely the healthier attitude than all these self-issue penis-envy Emos who fuss about their manlihood. :D
