Several Christian sources of the First Crusade report instances of cannibalism. Specifically, starving crusaders were reported to have eaten their fallen Muslim opponents.

Radulph of Caen, an eyewitness to events at Ma'arra in 1098, wrote, "In Ma'arra our troops boiled pagan adults in cooking-pots; they impaled children on spits and devoured them grilled." (1)

The chronicler Albert of Aix seemed to rank Muslims lower than dogs when he wrote, "Not only did our troops not shrink from eating dead Turks and Saracens; they also ate dogs!"

Guibert of Nogent, in his work Historia Hierosolymitana, provides more details on the incident of cannibalism at Ma'arra. There he notes that whenever the Tafurs who took part in the expedition discovered "scraps of flesh from the pagan's bodies" cannibalism was practiced with little discretion. According to Guibert, the Tafurs were well aware that the Muslims feared them because of cannibalism. For that reason, on at least one occasion, the Tafurs publicly "roasted the bruised body of a Turk over a fire as if it were meat for eating, in full view of the Turkish forces." Guibert notes that the Franks also practiced cannibalism, but they did so "in secret and as rarely as possible."

Fulcher of Chartres also refers to the same instance of cannibalism at Ma'arra. In his Historia Hierosolymitana, also known as A History of the Expedition to Jerusalem, Fulcher confirms that when the crusaders "suffered from excessive hunger" at Ma'arra, they engaged in cannibalism. He wrote, "I shudder to say that many of our men, terribly tormented by the maddness of starvation, cut pieces of flesh from the buttocks of Saracens lying there dead. These pieces they cooked and ate, savagely devouring the flesh while it was insufficiently roasted."

I find it hilarious. Only 1000 years ago we were just a bunch of barbarians but nothing shows ones disdain for the enemy better then munching on him. They didn't have any food with them and water was also scarce.

But it frightened the hell out of the enemy.. which is always an added bonus during war. Whether it was "appropriate". It's the year 1096. Fuck the Geneva Convention. They didn't even know what it was.

In Iraq they did, but still could not manage. In fact they did not use any ethics of war in Iraq they used both depleted uranium and White phosphrus being brutal can get you for so long but in the end it means nothing. Lets be sensible here, if America turned all its military might onto Iraq there would be no one left alive.

For arguments sake:


They could released a huge drones armada with orders to kill any thing with a body temperature of 36C.
They could poison rivers and water supplies from high altitude bombers.
Drop dirty bombs into cities.
Dump radioactive waste in the coastal waters. ( Yes, I know, they have very limited sea access.)
They could release plagues, pestilence disease that have never been seen before.
Destroy crops with genetically modified pests ect ect.


No normal country would be able to stop that, it would be wave after wave of death until there is no one left.

I am not advocating any of this things I listed as they are horrible. All I am saying is if they really really wanted to kill every one in Iraq they could have. The only thing stopping them was in their minds.

I don't even agree with the Crusades, and I see the patch as humorous. It's certainly a lot better than killing people and burning embassies over a few harmless cartoons which never meant to hurt anyone in the first place (many were for children's books).

I also think the "Infidel" word is something we should use with pride. We're basically playing on what Muslims think offends us. We're called immoral, evil, crusaders etc. so we feel entitled to at least turn the constant insults around to something positive. I am personally a proud infidel. :)

I haven't heard of any prohibitions towards pork in the New Testament. There are, however, prohibitions towards all kinds of meat during Catholic Lent, so instead people eat (or used to eat) only fish in this period. I'm obviously no religious expert, so I may have gotten some details wrong. By the way, the Catholic Church labeled a type of beaver as "fish" because it dwelled in the water. Hence, they could eat beaver during Lent but not pork. :D

In any case, dietary restrictions from Semitic religions should be irrelevant here in Europe. It's part of the indigenous European cultures to eat pork, as well as to imbibe in alcohol. It's been like this for thousands of years.

First of all, you can avoid parasites through cleanliness (cleaning hands, keeping the meat clean and preserved) and b cooking it properly. Indeed, all kinds of meats from all kinds of animals can carry diseases (ever heard of bird flu, salmonella or mad cow disease?), so it's senseless to single out only pigs as the carriers of potential diseases or parasites.

Second of all, the claim that pigs are dirty or dirtier than other animals is an exaggeration, and indeed it can be argued that the pig is among the cleanest animals in the world. It cleans itself by covering itself in mud, which cleanses its skin of parasites and keeps it from getting sunburned. Having kosher food so readily available is obviously the result of it being popular amongst non-Jews, because - as you mentioned - the Jewish population is so small. The proof is in the pudding, as they say. Supply and demand is a clear indication of what people want. The existence of kosher food doesn't stop people from eating non-kosher food, or pork, and that's what matters. Hard-liner vegetarians and vegans are more likely to shame people for eating pork.

In 1987 the year Britain was hit by a tornado i was working in Milton Keynes on a long contract.
My work colleagues and i lived in the week at a guest house just out of town, Werner our German colleague insisted on renting an apartment in Milton Keynes, this was hilarious as it was very expensive.
On the monday morning us English guys got back to the contract from having the weekend off from going back home. We found Werner had not turned in for work, this we found odd as he was a very puntual sort of man.
At 1.00pm lunch time Werner arrived on site, he was dressed in his weekend disco clothes.
He was very stressed, he sat down and explained to us all what had happened to him whilst we all ate our meals. He told us he went to the "Point" this was a new built complex in the centre of town with restraunts and discos. He explained he had drove his car, parked it in the carpark and went clubbing.
Very late in the evening he left the club and unlocked his car and got in it, no sooner than that 2 police officers stopped him and removed the keys from the car.They asked poor Werner if he had been drinking as he smelled of alcohol, he replied to them
"all you can smell is your socks un't knickers" the rest of his explanation was unheard as the rest of us Brit guys engulfed in laughter.
It transcribed later we found he was arrested, he refused to speak any English to the police at all.

On the monday they had released him only when he started to speak in English, from there they contacted Interpol and checked him out fully.
At his trial he refused to speak English again, his trial was put back until a German/English interpreter was found months later.
He was found guilty of drink driving, as they all left court Werner did a strange thing, he went over to the female officer who was at court and kicked her up the arse.

It's been so long since I was in uniform that at first I was a bit confused about what was on the back of the patch. It then hit me that the new uniforms have Velcro on them. Lucky kids! I had to sew my nametapes, unit crest, et cetera by hand (and my sewing is only so-so :p).

Well, that ties in with what I've said earlier - humans are naturally inclined to stick with their own group, but at the same time males are attracted to the fairer and females to the slightly darker. So you end up with lots of otherwise normal people who want a sex partner that is "exotic, but not too exotic". I know several Nordic women who are attracted to swarthy men with classical West Mediterranean features but wouldn't look twice at the beady-eyed, grotesque, beak-nosed Asiatic faces of the MENA immigrants who follow them around like sniffing dogs.
