The cutting off family thing is odd, but it's also done in Islam, except Mormons don't behead apostates. I don't see how it can be called a cult any more than any other religion.

Can someone explain these two things from the article?

Mormos do not drink tea, coffee or alcohol.

Committed Mormons wear special under-garments.

I think that's self-explanatory or do you mean the specific reason for it? It's a modern revelation given by God to Joseph Smith (considered a prophet by the members of the Church) that forbids the consumption of tea, coffee and alcohol (among other things)

Well...simply put those are a religious symbol that reminds a Church member of the covenants he has made with God - similar to the Sikh 5 Ks or maybe the beards in Islam etc.

Jehovah's Witnesses do it too. And I have seen this kind of behaviour in certain protestant churches as well.
