First of all you have to understand that it's a process. I started with just wearing a hair knot, then I went on to a head scarf, then I wore the niqab part time, and then I wore it full time.

It correlates really with how much you leave the home. At first I worked, then I studied, now I'm home full time.

Second of all, the niqab is about discipline. It's not just an accessory. Together with the niqab you need to introduce fasting, daily prayer and protocol. For me fasting means no food from Thursday evening to Saturday morning. Prayer means the morning prayer and the evening prayer. This is very important - pray together, stay together. Protocol means that you have a set of basic rules for how she should behave herself. For instance, walk a step behind you, open doors for you, not speak in public without your permission, not make eye contact with other men, addressing you in a certain way, etc.

So it's a "package deal", not just one thing. If you have the niqab you must also have the things that come with it. Otherwise it's pointless.

First you can tell your girlfriend to cover up more. Like wear a longer skirt, long sleeves, hair knot etc. Once she starts doing it she will become inclined to cover more and more. Leave her to do this for a few months at least. When you finally introduce the headscarf, she will see it as a positive suggestion that benefits her more than you. If she wears the headscarf, she will get to wearing the niqab herself, if she just happens to see it. The big step is really to start wearing the headscarf.

All of this correlates with how much she leaves the home. You can for instance get her to study online, rather than at a campus. That way she will only need to leave the home sometimes, and will then feel the need to cover up every time she does. Don't let her have a job.
