They're considered different. I know, it's strange to us Anglos but I've asked Germans, Dutch and Swiss themselves and they've all said it's different.
Germans say they're like a weird relation to themselves basically. Germans would gladly incorporate Austria into Germany but none want "German Switzerland". Very weird.
The culture is a bit different and they speak a funny sort of German called "Allemanic".
It seems the Swiss may indeed be a single ethnicity divided by multiple languages. There's a strong Swiss identity besides the local identities, each person identifies with their Canton of origin (like a very autonomous region).
It's a mountainous, formerly poor and isolated country so it's to be expected.

The "Swiss Germans" were of the Germanic Allemanic tribe. They probably absorbed the remnants of the Helvetti Celts too. (Napoleon called Switzerland the Helvetic Confederation for that region - even today the country code for Switzerland is "CH" - "Confederation Helvetic")
The Swiss Germans are closely related to other Allemanic speakers in Baden (Germany) Voralberg (Austria but wants to be part of Switzerland), Lichtenstein and Alsace (France).
Ficuscarica (a member from Baden) once said he'd like to see a Allemanic country based on those areas. He specifically excluded German Switzerland for the same reasons I explained earlier. German-speaking Switzerland really must be different.
German members can tell you a bit more about it I suppose.

German Swiss do not look much like Germans in my opinion. They look a lot more Alpine (as to be expected) and more Austrian (many are Dark). Also, culturally, Swiss Germans generally dislike Germans - they don't see any common things with them at all. Infact, we in Switzerland do not like much Germans haha (no offence :D)

I think Albion already said what had to be said. People from the Allemanic part of Switzerland appear to be a bit too narrow-minded (like alpine Prussians) for my taste - I prefer people from Southern Palatinate and Alsace (or Baden, of course), which seem to be a bit more "savoir vivre".
Also, I find their anti-German mindset rather annoying. People from areas of Germany with high unemployment rates often work in Switzerland, because the Swiss industry needs German experts. Probably this is the reason why people in Switzerland are arrogant towards Germans.
Well, many don´t know much about Germany and so they think the same about Badeners. The only problem is: the economy in Baden is fine, and no one here needs to go to Switzerland. And to give you my personal opinion: I really wouldn´t want to go into one of their cold, boring, narrow-minded valleys....

Ironic considering the general Swiss perception of Germans xD

It is my perception of other Germans, too. But compared to other Allemanic people (Baden, Alsace, by extension Southern Palatinate) I do find them narrow-minded.
Narrow-mindedness ranking:
average German = average German Swiss > other Allemanic/Rhine-Frankish groups :D

I remember this crazy idea (http://www.tagesanzeiger.ch/schweiz/standard/SVP-will-der-Schweiz-Nachbargebiete-einverleiben/story/23529806) some Swiss had a while back.

Would some of the Badener and Württemberger be interested in joining Switzerland rather than Germany ?

Tuan, nope. I would rather have Baden-Elsass-Southern Palatinate as one country, but I prefer being German over being Swiss.

Just the idea: if all those areas would indeed join Switzerland then Switzerland would jump from some 7.9 million inhabitants under the rule of freedom and democracy (particularly when compared to the rest of the world) to no less then 24.9 million people. It would become a European power.
LOL. And with Penduellio's map added as well it there would be over 30 million Swiss.

Switzerland is ran by Swiss banks (who still have "Jewish" gold in their vaults in Zurich). It's not ran by Goldman Sachs. That's his problem. :thumb001:

One months ago, a swiss minister said "there wouldn't be problems for annexation of Lombardy, because is our major trade partner"...3 days after, about 300,000 people signed a petition for the annexation :D

It's high time for a referendum. There couldn't be a clearer signal to Rome even if they tried. :thumb001:

I think we should just take a long look at the Swiss system and see whether we can learn from them. They are truly Europe's Finest (apart from us, of course, but we can always learn from the slightly Lesser Gods. :D).

Why you Italians never include Central Italy and Rome in that is always confusing to me. I know Central Italy gets more like Southern Italy, but what would happen to the Centre of the country if the North split off? Would the Centre + South just remain as the remnant of Italy or would it break up into 3 countries?
I like the idea of North + Central Italy as one state, the former Kingdom of Naples or the Two Sicilies as another and Sardinia and Corsica as another or with the North.
Malta could join the Kingdom of Naples. ;)

This isn't my plane, but Lega Nord one :p
Is based on a linguistical base of correlation between the languages spoken in these regions, the Gallo-Italic (or Celto-Italic) languages.
Some leghisti includes also Tuscany, Umbria and Marche in this hypotetical northern states, but other not.
An these are the linguistical subfamilies of the Peninsula

Actually it's the opposite, Central Italians are closer to Padanians. But I wouldn't include Rome in this business, because everyone knows it would be the kiss of death.
