A old one.

lyric
Con diez cañones por banda
Viento en popa a toda vela
No corta el mar si no vuela
Un velero bergantín

Bajel pirata que llaman
Por su bravura el temido
En todo el mar conocido
Del uno al otro confín

La luna en el mar riela
Y en la lona gime el viento
Y alza en blando movimiento
Olas de plata y azul

Y ve el capitán pirata
Cantando alegre en la popa
Asia a un lado, al otro Europa
Y allá a su frente Estambul

Navega velero mío
Sin temor que ni enemigo navío
Ni tormenta ni bonanza
Tu rumbo a torcer alcanza
Ni a sujetar tu valor

Veinte presas hemos hecho
A despecho del inglés
Y han rendido sus pendones
Cien naciones a mis pies

A quien nadie impuso leyes
Y no hay playa sea cualquiera
Ni bandera de esplendor
Que no sienta mi derecho
Y de pecho a mi valor

Que es mi barco mi tesoro
Que es mi dios mi libertad
Mi ley la fuerza y el viento
Mi única patria la mar

I am not sure about who made the subtitles because the translation is often inaccurate and the names are mispelled (Zwijndrecht, Abbenbroek etc.) but this is a video clip that shows TV/cinema news reel about the 1953 flood disaster (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/North_Sea_flood_of_1953).

This scene is so typically Dutch and sadly: it's in rapid decline. The scene of the parents or grandparents eating with the (grand)children under the lamp in the kitchen or living room. All closely together to survive the cold, wet winter, eating traditional cuisine etc.

Yap but having dinner together, while sitting below the only lamp in the kitchen or the living room would have been very normal for people until .. way up in the 1980s. It's not just the changes within society that have caused it's decline but also rapid industrialisation: homes were now properly heated so they didn't need the body warmth anymore.. homes were now properly lit so they didn't need to sit underneath that one single lamp in the kitchen or the living room. My parents and grandparents and I still did this. Some of my family members still do it but I will probably be the very last generation.

"Tuna"of the Students of Medicine of the University of Coimbra

GzVMO2aenCQ

"A tuna is a group of university students in traditional dress who play guitar and sing serenades. The tradition originated in Spain and Portugal in the 13th century as a means of students to earn money or food. A member of a tuna is known as a tuno or sopista."

The name TUNA comes from French roi de Thunes,[1] "king of Tunis", a title used by leaders of vagabonds.
In the old times (medieval days) the Sopistas would use their musical talents to entertain people in exchange for a coin and a bowl of soup (sopa, in Portuguese and Spanish, hence the name sopistas). They would also play their music under the windows of the ladies they wished to court.

From its origins to the present day, from and through of the Tunas have continued the cultivation of popular instruments such as the bandurria, lute, guitar and tambourine, instruments which are named in the Spanish book Libro del Buen Amor by Juan Ruiz (c. 1283 - c. 1350).[2]
For these occupations, they took their guitars and bandurrias and sang popular songs. The tunos or sopistas also showed abilities for music, and in courting ladies that they had been wooing to.[3] The sopistas were poor students that with their music, friendly personality and craftiness scoured the cheap eating-houses, convents, streets and squares for a bowl of soup and fr a few coins which help to finance their studies.

I've studied in this University for some years, great academic memories. The University of Coimbra has every year 3000 foreign students from 70 different countries and is an enlightenment beacon since 1290 (!), 722 years of history.

I've sang this song too many times, always with the booze.

I haven't made clearly my mind yet about Thatcher.
It looks like she, kind of save, British from a decrepit society, at least in some places. But let's be fair, that kind of society existed everywhere in Europe, from Germany to Portugal. It was the late 70's and early 80's, Europe was less fancy than it is today, even with all our economic problems. It's a mistake to look back on history with the eyes of the present. She was a close friend to Chilean dictatorship and according to what I saw last week, many people do hate her, especially in Wales. "She" invented the offshores, that cancer of the modern world, today it is the lair for unscrupulous people money, the tax evasion wonderland.
On the other hand, I really think she made the British society a better society, she saved again the UK in the Falkland war, apparently her close ties with Reagan made a lot of difference and she was a hell of a politician. According to experts, she must have been the best or second best British prime minister.
What's your opinion?

Belonging to Portugal, this is one area of the world that is still untouched by the negative aspects of tourism, and there are plans in place to ensure that the infrastructure of these beautiful and natural islands is sustained long into the future. The Azores Islands are located in the Atlantic Ocean, about two hours flying time and 930 miles (1500 Km) from Lisbon, and about five hours flying time and 2422 miles (3900 Km) from the eastern coast of North America. The islands' individual areas vary between S. Miguel's 290 square miles (747 Km2) and Corvo's 7 square miles (17 Km2). The islands are Sao Miguel, Santa Maria, Terceira, Pico, Faial, Sao Jorge, Graciosa, Flores and Corvo, and each of them produces their own variety of fresh cheese that accompanies every meal, often along with wines that mainly come from Pico.

His work was very popular during the late 1920s and the 1930s (he appeared on the cover of Time magazine), but his audience left him during WWII, when his individualism and their patriotism diverged in a wood. During the 1960s and 1970s, his work was widely translated in Europe, where he gained an enthusiastic readership in the Slavic countries. On this continent, he has been adopted by members of the ecology movement, disaffected members of traditional institutional religions, and academic scholars, who together have revived his reputation.

A thousand bloody hand prints stain the walls of
Liberty.
A stranger hides in dreams denied, awaiting his
Release.
I've seen this picture before.
I never thought that we would end up here,
When fascism comes as an angel of light
Its license parading as Tyranny drives forth its son.

The Son of Mourning dominating fears, afflicting fallen
Men.
His body highly organized; it's coming into prominence
To bear its ominous warnings.
It's in your blood to comprehend it's origin,
For those who refuse to remember the past are
Condemned to repeat it,
The first and the last, Dust to Dust ...

History if His Story
And life is laughing at its peril.

Building towers that come fourth in men> Shifting powers consuming us within,
The will puzzle the apostles till the end.

Enter into the silence, into the dying life of America,
The brave, the slave, the grave.

The shattered pigs dying as primitive savages,
Eating their flesh, they will lie rotting in dirt,
While a stranger among you has challenged the course
Of human existence and alien forces.
The birth of the black prince is setting the stage
In its thriving dissension, exalting his rank,
And the innocent man will fall victim to hands in the
Trial of Truth
And its twisted reversal.
The union of factions bleeds shock to the system,
For civilization had ended today,
The transitional nature of acts and society climb in its
Place
While its face re-creates until your god is dead.
Enlighten me with your pale statues, face of inhibition,
And until your reign has ended, frighten me with your
Stale - taste - tongue of inquisition.

In your eyes I will come forth in men with no justice,
No order to defend, and the stone will be cast again ...

Enter into the fire, into the bloody gates of America,
The great, the fate, the late.

Another fearsome bucket filling in swimming pool in residential area in Braga.

http://youtu.be/UPIboTdIYyQ

The Author:
"I'm not the owner of the swimming pool, I just live next door :). The pilot told me that the owner is entitled for compensation for damage or lost water if he files a complaint with the Civil Defense, which my neighbor didn't, AFAIK. He explained that filling at swimming pools is only done as a last resort (but not illegal in Portugal) because of the risks involved (children playing, damage to property, flying debris such as garden furniture, etc), but he did so on this case because there were houses in danger and the water source was so convenient.
You can see another angle here:
http://youtu.be/T8Dg6F6qTUw

He also detailed the operation a little bit more: he was returning to the airfield from another bushfire when he saw the initial smoke column. He took the initiative to land and start the attack on his own since the fire was so close to houses. He made about 25 refills at the swimming pool, and this bucket carries about 600 liters, if I remember correctly. The swimming pool level lowered not even 40 cm after the mission. The helicopter left when the first firetruck arrived, the fire having already been extinguished.

EDIT: I became friends with the pilot flying on the video, he has a very nice onboard video from another mission here:
http://youtu.be/VV2vxYYD8P0

ORIGINAL DESCRIPTION: I woke up this morning to this show. A loaded helo (Eurocopter AS350) from the portuguese firefighters landed in front of my house, droped 4 men in full gear, hooked up a bucket and started waterbombing a fire that broke out (or someone started, most likely) right next to a neighbor's house. After 20 mins the fire was controlled by a 5 men team :).

Many thanks to the unseen team on the ground, for risking their lives to save other's property.

Filmed in Braga, Portugal"

GIPS - GNR (Guarda Nacional Republicana (National Republican Guard))

These guys are the firefighting special units of Civil Preteccion (Protection and Relief Intervention Group-GIPS), the first to arrive, usually airborne. They try to extinguish the fire in its early phase, without water, only with mechanic (Chainsaws) and hand tools (hoes, shovels and axes). Meanwhile the helicopter that carried them is bringing the first buckets of water, long before the arrival of the first firefighters.

http://youtu.be/2REbPRSGvqU

These videos I've posted can make some of you think that this looks like war but in fact it is. In summers like the current one when our property and wealth gets burned, all this operations are implemented as if in a state of war, all the language used is as in military operations a fire is talked about as a "theater of operations". Some of this men and women: pilots, GIPS and regular firefighters are seen here as true heroes. Sometimes they pay their deeds with their own lives.
For them our respect.
