Abuse of negrep function

Some members have again been subjected to barrages of negrep comments - I have now rectified it.

The horror is that in some cases, staff members have participated in it as well. I do not take kindly to this and it will be addressed in the future.

A mod of this forum once neg-repped me because at a post about what's in our fridge I mentioned having balsamic vinegar in the fridge :D

And apparently she thought it was such a big deal that balsamic vinegar shouldn't be kept in the fridge that she neg-repped me! :D Go figure. Italians must really love their balsamic vinegar :p

Oh and I forgot to mention it was creamy balsamic vinegar which is supposed to be in the fridge as it's more of a sauce than a vinegar. :D

That's the problem I had before - I was giving people positive rep when I wanted to voice something in private. I still use positive rep for most things though, it's a shame there isn't a neutral rep for short messages. I often relay info that way.

Yeah, same here. I often comment or give people a bit of advice via rep.

The only neg-rep I recall getting was from IM - 'arrogant englishman' or something like that.
It was because I said I didn't want his people associated with the English, but I put it across a bit different from that.

To be honest I wouldn't be bothered half the time, via the rep comments is just easy for short messages. Think of it like a forum version of a pager.

But everyone can see them, the rep comments can only be seen by me, the person I sent them to and the admin (if they decide to look).
Some things are in rep comments for a reason and are not to be broadcast to the world. ;)

Private messages can probably be read by the higher levels of Admin. I had a forum before and could do it (although it wasn't VB).
I couldn't care less about Mods seeing most of the stuff, just that some of it isn't what I want the Apricity unwashed masses to see. ;)

Sometimes I wonder on the wisdom of the reputation system, it allows for more sinister, barbed attacks, and the silent factor of it can make for the ones being neg-repped to feel more upset by there not being any public accountability for their actions.

The only thing is that there's no neutral rep comment feature for sending comments though. I've highlighted this before, and so since most members are non-funding it means that they communicate positive, negative and neutral rep comments all via positive rep. Most members will insult you or disagree via positive rep because they haven't got neg rep.

No I didn't. I use positive rep comments as compliments for good or funny posts and not necessarily as a SMS tool. Sometimes but not regularly. Negative rep is something I give out really sparsely and only when the other side 'deserves' it and asked for it for a long time. Let me think...Uhm, I'd say that I didn't hand out more than 7 or 8 disapproval reputation points ever.

A very accurate observarion. Disregarding your particular case, my overall judgement would be that quality of postings has very little to do with rep, unless its VERY high quality.
The main thing which matters is, the ability to make, as many posters as possible, feel good.
That means posts written with emotion and wit.
Informative posts usually suffer, undortunately.
Loki has high rep, because he is the main admin, a nice guy and usually gets excessive rep in the Apricity helpdesk suggestion section.
Many others have reps because of their pics.
Some have because they only give their judgemental opinions on topics instead of actively debating and hence their followers crown them.
Good posters rarely make it to the top, with a few exceptions.

I like the reputation system but it should not be done away with because a few people are abusing it.

I think that the rep system is actually quite good because it creates communication between people who wouldn't have normally answered to a post of yours etc. Some people will abuse it but the majority don't.
