Map of the Roman cities and towns in the Catalan area
Tarraco (nowadays Tarragona) was the oldest Roman city in the whole Iberian peninsula, and the most important.

The SE part of Western Frankland, Carolingian Empire. This Duchy, with capital in Barcelona, was the birthplace of the Catalan-Languedocian language.

The conquests by the great James I to the Moors meant the expansion of the Catalans along the Mediterranean coastline of the Iberian peninsula.
Also reflected the Treaty of Corbeil (1258) between James and the King of France, which definitely separated Catalonia and Occitania forever.
