Amateur art buff finds £35 million head of Courbet masterpiece

An amateur art buff has discovered the previously unknown "head" Gustave Courbet's most notorious work, The Origin of the World, from an antiques dealer for £1,200, and has been told it is worth an estimated £35 million.

The unnamed art lover stumbled on the almost life size lost 19th century masterpiece in 2010 nestling among pieces of furniture and bric-a-brac, and even persuaded the owner to knock 200 euros off the sale price.

After two years of painstaking detective work and a battery of spectrographic and chemical tests, it has just been authenticated by the world's leading Courbet expert, Jean-Jacques Fernier, who this week wrote that the 1866 work was “recognised as by Courbet”.
