View Full Version : Why is Slavic music always being passed off as Gypsy music?

rashka

Every time I see a documentary or commercial on TV about gypsies I hear Balkan music in the background, specifically Yugoslav and Bulgarian music. But this is not the music of the gypsies! It is Slavic music!

I saw one documentary about the gypsies in Romania and they started the show off with very distinct Balkan music.

The gypsies do play this wonderfully 'distinct' sound often at weddings, at festivals, in the streets, at parties etc. and are hired for those events but it is not their music and should not be stamped as such. They tend to have a different mode of music than that of the slavs however they have adopted Balkan music into their own styles.

Just because (some) Slavs consider certain music as theirs does not mean it is completely Slavic derived. Actually, I would say it is rather foreign to Slavic urheimat countries like Poland and Ukraine. Music in the area of Balkans is a blend of many different influences, Slavic being only one of them. Another one of them is Gypsy. Gypsy music influenced many areas that they migrated through, Balkans being no exception.

No, not really, but Romani ppl are known to have a certain talent for music and many are musicians (in Hungary as well). Knowing that, many play/sing our folk or turbo-folk music to earn money. Simple.

If you look at their music styles you'll notice it depends on their geo location.

Gypsies have influenced the development of local music, especially in Southern Europe. Nothing new but still I guess it is still possible to say what can be seen as native

The oriental Gypsy influence is clearly detectable in the first one. The two have absolutely nothing in common. Chalga appeared as a phenomenon in Bulgaria in the 90s via Serbia.

You Albanians have inferiority complexes. Severe. Where does this come from? Must be from all that inbreeding you do up in the highlands. No wonder you have deformed faces. It is so bloody obvious to see. People are too nice here and just call you dinarids but you guys are far from dinards. You'd fit better in the Middle East to Caucasus.

In front of me you dark short iranid would be called a turk, these how we call dark people in highlands. And of course iranid, it is not left in hands of mongrels like you to decide who is dinarid or not. What we know, is that serbs are too dark , not just for being slavs, but evan for being europeans.

Keep laughing, cause you know it's true. Your people are inbred totally. Just look at the google books on Albanian clans. It's all on the internet. This inbreeding contributed to your special looks.

That's it, I'm opening a thread with real eyewitness proof, you're going down, cat lady. :coffee:

This kind of music came from Serbia (Yugoslavia) when our female singers tried to copy Lepa Brena and some other turbo-folk stars.

IMO, Lepa Brena was a show-woman, not a singer with a great vocal abilities.
