I like the Australian $10 note. It has the poem The Man from Snowy River printed on it in micro-print.

From where I've traveled, the Swedish ones looked the prettiest.

Cool thread, will add some pics later :)

By the way the South African ones look very nice with animal pictures on them.

Let me start with the Czech Rep. which still has some very nice ones which are still in circulation as they did not introduce € till now (a wise decision)

http://www.banknotes.com/CZ16.JPG

Ema Destinnová - was a Czech operatic soprano with a strong and soaring lyric-dramatic voice

http://www.thecurrencycommission.com/banknotes/Czech-1993-1000.jpg

František Palacký - was a Czech historian and politician, the most influential person of the Czech National Revival, called "Father of the Nation".

http://praguevisit.files.wordpress.com/2010/11/5000.jpg?w=620

Tomáš Garrigue Masaryk - was an Austrian-Czech politician, sociologist and philosopher, who as an eager advocate of Czechoslovak independence during World War I became the founder and first President of Czechoslovakia. He originally wished to reform the Austro-Hungarian monarchy into a democratic federal state, but during the First World War he began to favour the abolition of the monarchy and, with the help of the Allied Powers, eventually succeeded

Honestly? I always thought that it looks ugly compared to the others - the head is badly drawn and the background is too empty to draw the attention away from the lousy drawing skills with which the head was drawn. Way WAY uglier than 200lt which is the nicest of them all, but 500lt is also uglier than 100lt and 50lt.

20lt is ugly too though:

10lt is not so good (crappy drawing skills here too) but not as bad as 500lt:

Euro banknotes are utterly ugly. I can't even remember what they have on.
Good old Escudo notes had portuguese figures:

The last series of Francs (dating from the 90's I think) was ugly, but we had nice ones before (included both sides of the bills for some) :

Canada, Australia, NZ and the UK launched plastic banknotes a few years ago, (to prevent banknotes from being torn through wear-and-tear, and to survive a spin in the washing-machine if people accidentally leave money in their pockets, and to keep banknotes cleaner, and have a longer lifespan in circulation, and to make counterfeiting more difficult.)

They're designed to last over twice as long as cotton-paper banknotes which will reduce the replacement costs of banknotes, as well as helping to save the environment, and have enhanced security features.

During the 2012 London Olympic games, The Royal Mint launched limited-edition 50 pence coins with a range of Olympic sports featured on the 50p coins that were winning designs drawn by members of the public. Few people have managed to collect all 29 of the designs in circulation.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8odUVIAXPS8

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-iOVkaEEtqo

The Royal Mint once made an error with issuing undated 20 pence coins, so The Mint requested anyone who finds an undated 20p coin in their change to return it back to the Royal Mint and receive a reward of £100 for each coin. Undated 20p coins are very rare though.

Polymer. There's not many in circulation at the moment, but the idea may catch-on if it improves the lifespan and durability of banknotes against wear-and-tear, in addition to make counterfeitimg more diificult.

I personally prefer current material. Slightly "damaged" banknotes look nice. But I've noticed Poland produced one polymer banknote too:

I think it's sad for the EU states who are in the Eurozone losing their individual currencies. Most of the northern European nations still keep their own currencies. It's like a part of their own cultural identity has been lost with it. This video of French people changing their traditional Francs for euros made me feel sad. I think the French should hold onto their old currency as these notes will be worth a lot of value in rare antique collections in the future.
