The authors stress that they "do not refute the claim that there are individuals who emit the virtuous victim signal because they experience legitimate harm and also conduct themselves in decent and laudable ways."

America breeds sociopaths and psychopaths, I've always said it.
I think it's the dog-eat-dog work culture

jamesbond had a topic in the psychology section that points out that psychology can be a long term game played to reprogram the masses. i think this study would be confirming the fruits of that particular labor.

the best we can do at this point is educate ourselves in breaking subtle mental/emotional programming while also speaking with others in such a way to reinforce positivity and honor.

there is some part of me that recalls that love is the true path of any individual. i will remember it when times get hard.

Welp this 100% doesn't surprise me the least bit. Thinking back to all the virtue signallers I knew, not one of them (YES that's right) was genuinely a nice or down to earth person...in fact all of them were pretentious, cliquey, group-think types and narcissistic attention seekers. Also they were all privileged and rich/well-off, and they tended to be on the popular side, not oppressed like they want you to think at all. Tbh if you come across someone who hardcore virtue signals on a website I would be vary wary even if they seem nice or good in any sense. Although there are still bound to be a number who don't have bad personality traits.
