You have to understand the times. I am talking 1990s here. Can you think back to the Europe at the time ? Nobody cared about the East. Communist was dead. Little celebration yay ! Apart from that ? The only thing mentioned in the news was the trouble in Russia and Chechnya and, of course, Yugoslavia. Greece was for cheap holidays (slowly replacing Spain at the time who was still nr.1), it was America we were looking at.
I was a teenager. Greece was for cheap holidays and about the rest we didn't care. For as far as we were concerned the whole area was a crater. But then again: it's the traditional way for us to look at most of Europe. If for most of your history, just every main-lander neighbor had the intention to come and loot your country, you tend to start looking overseas. The pro-European sentiments were only held by officials. We thought it would be a market, about the rest we didn't care.
