Basically, most of the revered stories about Native Americans center around instances of violent, heroic resistance. The most prominent Indian leaders in our history are associated with violent uprisings or defying the US government. Sitting Bull and Crazy Horse massacring American soldiers at Little Bighorn, Joseph Nez Perce and Geromino for outwitting, evading, and embarrassing the US soldiers trying to force them on a reservation.
I can't imagine having a native group that put up so little effective resistance, and did nothing to instill national pride in the history of the indigenous people.
We in America can at least take pride in the resistance of our native people, you in Australia can't really, and maybe this is why you resent them.
