I knew a guy who was called maria but only in middle name. A Austrian Guy, I think I dont know any guy who is called maria with first name, but marie in france is possible. Actually the french have a few such names where it could be both male or female.
in Latin America they tend to combine it with a masculine name, ex. Jose Maria
