Basic Water Purification and Filtration Techniques?

I don't drink bottled water and I'm looking for ways to filter my tap water given that it's no doubt filled with all sorts of chemicals and other contaminants. I've been looking into it but a lot of the details are too, uh, complex for my chemistry averse mind and the filtration systems I've seen are a little pricey. Does anyone have any good links or reccomendations?

I also never use filter water,
Am not a chemist, but I have lot of knowledge about it,
I use Chlorin gas for water purification process,
As this gas well for germ killing.
