Southern Europeans; Do you feel "European" or "Mediterranean" first?

The "European" argument.. "I am a Southern European. I feel emotionally, physically, culturally closer to most if not all European countries than I feel to any non-European Mediterraneans."


The "Mediterranean" argument.. "I am a Southern European. I feel emotionally, physically, culturally closer to other Mediterranean countries, regardless of continent, than I feel to non-Mediterranean Europeans.


If you pick the former, you feel closer to Poles, Finns, Russians, Germans, Dutch, Brits etc. than you feel to Lebanese, Israelis, Tunisians, etc. If you pick the latter the reverse is true.

I only asked this to Iberians, Italians, Sicilians/Maltese and Greeks. I know Portuguese are not technically Mediterranean but some feel culturally such.

I added a choice for French.

I am a Catalan and I feel South-Western/Ibero-Occitan and Pyreno-Med. That is, as much European as Mediterranean.

In both cases it depends on where it is defined from.

If Europe is defined from the north or from the east, then I simply don't feel much related. If The Mediterranean is defined from the south or from the east, then I don't feel much related either.

In any case, both are secondary to feeling what I am, i.e. Spanish.

Secondary places hardly deserve any further distinctions.

Nope, just for my respective ethnicities, British and Italian.

This is a european cultural community and some don't feel european?

I am Greek and I feel Greek first.
