isnt the map a bit weird? indian skin average is lighter than spanish and italians? portuguese equal with sri lankans? greeks are fairer than finns, russians, belarusians, germans? white british and ethnic french are darkest skinned in europe? and north korea are fairest country in the world?
this is what the luschan scale map really says
dont quote the gray part please -- this post should exterminate it self :D
Here's another pic of some Japanese students (2nd from the right looks just like a Filipina friend of mine):

From personal experiences I have seen many Japanese people, especially tourists and they seemed very light skinned. I know Koreans mostly from videos and they seemed to have a more yellowish skin complexion, but in reality I believe these two people would be quite similar to one another.
They have the same variations in skin tone, however it is easier to find light Koreans than Japanese. It's notable that even Korean men are mostly light skinned although when it comes to women, very pale Japanese are very, very 'white'. In fact, so much so I've even heard Europeans (West and North Europeans) claim that the "Japanese are whiter than white people". Of course, I don't think this is to be taken literally, Nordics, Celts and Anglo Saxons are often known to be self deprecating when giving compliments.

They honestly don't look very distinguishable from Koreans so I really can't fault Europeans for being unable to tell them apart. Most native Japanese and Chinese have the same opinion themselves that East Asians look alike. While Koreans do make the distinction between Chinese, most don't see themselves as different from the Japanese.
FME, it's often 'racists' with obvious agendas that exaggerate the differences between Japanese and Koreans. And it's important to note that these 'racists' are often not East Asian or White.
Yes, it's a really interesting subject since research has shown that East Asians are light skinned for different reasons than Europeans. While lowered melanin levels result in Europeans having greater incidences of skin cancer than Africans, East Asians have the same skin cancer risks as Africans. This means that less melanin is not the reason Asians have light skin but rather a separate and unidentified gene/mutation.

While East Asians -- Chinese, Japanese and Korean -- also are light skinned, these European alleles are not present, suggesting that while both groups' lighter skin color evolved to allow for better creation of vitamin D in northern climates, they did so in a different way. This difference also affects skin cancer rates. Europeans have 10 to 20 times higher rates of melanoma than Africans. However, despite also having lighter skin, East Asians have the same melanoma rates as Africans. The reason for this difference can only be explained when the gene mutations for both groups are found.
