Unfortunately I am not a big expert on Japan's history but I believe this movie should generalize authentically all major events this country came through.
I learned from this educational video that they referred to ukiyo as 春画, while this term have some reference to erotic pictures. It confuses me a lot actually.

Seen this a long time ago. Seems to be accurate, but I would add that the Japanese sided with Western imperialists.
Similar to how USA forced Japan to open up trade, they tried the same with Korea but failed. Then Japan threatened Korea and forced Korea to sign unequal treaties with the US. After Japan banned Catholicism, many Japanese Catholics went to Southeast Asia and worked as mercenaries for European powers such as the Spanish and Dutch helping them subjugate the Philippines and Indonesia. Japan also supported Christian countries against China during the Boxing Rebellion as part of the Eight Nation Alliance.
