Maryland: Northern or Southern?
Well, first of all, let me post some links describing the history of the Palatinate of Maryland: http://www.usahistory.info/southern/Maryland.html, http://www.mdhs.org/education/teachers/md-history-qa, http://msa.maryland.gov/msa/stagser/...50_years_later , http://thomaslegion.net/founderofmar...baltimore.html, http://www.aboutfamouspeople.com/article1020.html , http://www.ushistory.org/us/5a.asp
So, the basic summary is that Maryland was founded as a colony where English Catholics could worship without fear of censure. It was a divided state in many ways and these divisions were brought into sharp relief during the Civil War. So, what do you suppose? Is Maryland a Northern state or is it Southern? I would call it a border state, with northern counties with greater affiliation with the North and southern counties having stronger ties to the South. What think you?
