I recently got a compilation on iTunes of all of Maurice Ravel's solo piano works. It is really good. I had always avoided Ravel because of his reputation with the 'popular' Bolero song which I hated.
But when I dug a bit deeper, I was astounded at his rich harmonic techniques and lonely melodies. He is a perfect transition from the Common Practice Period (Baroque through Romantic) and Modernism (a la Bartok, Schoenberg, Webern, early Stravinsky, etc.).
