    this is interesting.

    in the region of America where I live there were a few Old colonial Jewish families, mainly Sephardic from England who are still around and usually have surnames like , Sauls/Saul, Jacobs,Isaacs, Moise (Moses) or even Downard and then there are of course the later Ashkenazi names typical of most American Jews like Klein,Schwartz, Greenbaum,Cohen, etc....

    I have no idea to be honest. Maybe some other Yugoslav or Slovene members could enlighten me.

    Cohen, Levy and Abravanel are pretty much Jewish specific, f.e.

    - Salamone, Salomone, Salamoni
    - Diamante
    - Anania
    - Barone
    - Carafa
    - Montalto
    - Gesualdo
    - Viterbo
    - Ventura

    Those are the ones I can think of offhand. For Malta, Azzopardi signals Sephardic ancestry.
    A couple of Italian names I know that are supposed to signify Jewish ancestry are Luzzato and Castiglione as well.

    cool list! A lot of the names don't really look like clear indicators of jewish ancestry though (Castelli, Carpi etc). Just off hand Castelli, Castello, Castellini etc. signify someone who lived either in or near a castle.. and Carpi is for someone from a town in Emilia Romagna. I looked at C's because I obviously had to check if my surname was on there hah

    A few Jewish surnames of important families in Brazil: Mindlin (Ashkenazi), Feffer (Ashkenazi), Kasinsky (Ashkenazi), Safra (Mizrahi, one of the richest families in the world, a conglomerate, mainly banking, but also involved in helicopter manufacturing, paper industry, and many other activities), Safdie (Mizrahi), Abravanel (Sephardic, owners of SBT, the 2nd largest TV network in Brazil), Civita (Italkim, Italian Jewish, owners of Grupo Abril, Veja), Sirotsky (Ashkenazi, owners of grupo Terra, Zero Hora), Klabin (Ashkenazi), Bloch (Ashkenazi), Azulay (Moroccan Jewish), Medina (Moroccan Jewish), Steinbruch (Ashkenazi, mega textile steel group), Garfinkel (Ashkenazi), Herrmann (Ashkenazi), Klein (Ashkenazi), Saverin (Ashkenazi), Horn (Mizrahi), Goldfarb (Ashkenazi), Krigsner (Ashkenazi, Boticario company), Peres (Sephardic).

    In the list of Brazilian billionaires, the following surnames, of those listed above, appear as billionaires:

    * SAFRA
    * HERRMANN
    * CIVITA
    * KRIGSNER
    * KLEIN
    * HORN
    * SAVERIN
    * PERES
    * GARFINKEL
    * ABRAVANEL (under "Silvio Santos", artistic name of Senor Abravanel)
    * STEINBRUCH
    * GOLDFARB
    http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of...s_by_net_worth

    Clearly, the most overrepresented group among the wealthiest families in Brazil. There are many others. And some of those not listed, such as Mindlin, Feffer, Sirotsky and Klabin, are also billionaires and extremely powerful.
