New York Gov declares a state emergency to deal with the swine flu

Gov. Paterson has declared a state emergency to deal with the swine flu.
The declaration allows health care professionals including pharmacists, dentists and midwives to administer vaccinations for the H1N1 virus so long as they receive proper training.

Paterson spokesman Morgan Hook said the governor signed the declaration Wednesday at the request of local health officials.

It states that the swine flu has caused at least 75 deaths but “the true magnitude of cases may be as much as 10 percent of the population or more in some areas.”

To me, the phrase `State of Emergency` implies that there is panic and mayhem. Are there people rioting in the streets and looting?

It's all just overblown hysteria. There's only been about 6,000 confirmed deaths from swine flu worldwide, while there's probably already been at least 800,000+ deaths from regular seasonal influenza this year alone.

No. You'd be surprised by how often the words "state of emergency" are used by the government these days. The government certainly loves fear, as it is the best means to erode established law, invade the privacy of its citizens, and grab more power for the government at the expense of the country's citizens.

There is no fear needed, the death rate is around 1%. I am currently getting over Swine Flu and am recovering fine.

I am glad to hear that the New York State government is doing its job in protecting public health by preventing a real crisis before it gets really bad.

AFAIK, there is no data indicating that this strain is any more virulent than any of the other common strains (which are, I believe, responsible for exponentially more deaths than the H1N1).
