In general yes, and many Greeks consider southern Italians to be part of their cultural 'family' if you will. I just came back from a Greek festival yesterday and noticed how similar some of the music sounded, and the people looked the same, etc.

"Northern Italians" are a pointless concept. They do not exist.
There are in Northern Italy all sorts of anthropological backgrounds, with different mindsets, different social values and family structures:
• Piedmont: relatively disciplined, loyal, rational, rather high civic spirit, and no much attention given to religion.
• Veneto: definitely Catholic, hard working attitude along with civic irresponsability, conservative (can compare to the Burgos Province or Navarra in Spain).
• Emilia-Romagna: rich and rude, noisy, enjoy good life, good sex, good food, and also political and ideological fanatism (Italian communism and fascism started there). The Spanish equivalent can be found in Valencia.
• Liguria: business-like and greedy, soft-spoken braggards who always say it's not their fault if they have the best economy and the best tourist resorts (sounds like Barcelona)
• Lombardia: all the same up- and downsides as in the surrounding regions, just exaggerated to an unbearable extent.

My cousin has some Venetian ancestry. Venice was one the jewel of Italy. That's mall state stood against the Turks and many other problems in that region.
