And beta is second to the top, but people also use it for 'loser male' because it's easier to divide people into two categories if we're going to act hierarchical. More correct term for a loser male would be 'omega' IMO, where I'd reserve the beta male for the Average Joe.
Also, what's alpha for one person isn't necessarily alpha for the rest. It's also a greatest common denominator thing.

The nomenclature comes from radiation types; alpha, beta and gamma. Gamma is the most penetrating and hence the most desirable.
