Getting back to the topic....

I find it rather convenient how this "schizophrenic episode" only lasted as long as he was on stage.

The spin doctors couldn't have come up with anything more creative and less believable than a "schizophrenic episode" which happened just as he was about to do his job. I'm also quite sure than this "schizophrenic episode" resolved itself spontaneously once his "work" was finished!

I dunno man. I was watching a documentary the other day and it mentioned that sometimes the police would climb trees to peer into peoples' bedroom windows to make sure they weren't having interracial sex.

That is creepy. I can't even have sex when the cat is watching.

‘Fake’ sign language interpreter said he had schizophrenic fit during Mandela ceremony

'What happened that day, I see angels come to the stadium.' Thamsanqa Jantjie - who is accused of faking sign language interpretation during Nelson Mandela's memorial service - said he was distracted by hallucinations and feared turning violent. Jantjie - who stood on stage with several world leaders, including President Obama - insisted he knew proper sign language.


Thamsanqa Jantjie said he feared turning violent when he suffered a schizophrenic episode during ceremony for Nelson Mandela ceremony.

The man who flailed his way through sign language interpretation during Nelson Mandela’s memorial service said he was distracted by hallucinations while on stage.

“What happened that day, I see angels come to the stadium,” Thamsanga Jantjie said, describing a vision he had during the ceremony on Tuesday. “I start realizing that the problem is here.”


Jantjie's bad sign language while next to President Obama was the result of a schizophrenic attack.

“I was in a very difficult position,” he told the Associated Press. “And remember those people, the president and everyone, they were armed. There was armed police around me. If I start panicking, I’ll start a problem. I have to deal with this in a manner so that I mustn’t embarrass my country.”

Jantjie, 34, insisted he was using proper sign language during the service that was broadcast around the world. He said his schizophrenic episode caused him to lose focus, as he stood near several world leaders, including President Obama.


Jantjie insisted that he knows proper sign language, but was distracted by visions of ‘angels.’

And in a startling admission, Jantjie said things can get out of hand when he starts seeing things.

“Sometimes I get violent,” he told the Associated Press. “Sometimes I will see things chasing me.”

The Sun reported that Twitter users who claimed to have sign language training said Jantjie repeatedly used signs for “donkey,” “lightning bolt” and “prawns.”

Jantjie said that he was once hospitalized in a mental health facility for more than a year. Despite his bizarre display, he was still pleased with his overall performance at the ceremony at FNB stadium honoring the anti-apartheid hero and former South African president.


Jantjie, who stood on stage with several world leaders during the Mandela service, said he suffered a schizophrenic episode.

“You must remember, you are talking about an interpreter who has been interpreting through these years,” he told Radio 702 in Johannesburg. “And if I was interpreting wrong through these years, why should it become an issue now?

“I think that I’ve been a champion of sign language.”

However, officials with the Deaf Federation of South Africa claim they had complained about Jantjie before, but they were ignored by the Africa National Congress.

A South African deputy Cabinet minister said Thursday that “a mistake happened” in hiring the bogus interpreter.

Hendrietta Bogopane-Zulu said government officials have tried to track down the people of SA Interpreters, the company who was hired by the ANC, but they “have vanished into thin air.”


Jantjie stood just 3 feet away from President Obama during the event, which was broadcast around the world.

The man widely accused of being a bogus interpreter was contrite.

“I would like to tell everybody that if I’ve offended anyone, please, forgive me,” Jantjie told the AP from his house on the outskirts of Soweto. “But what I was doing, I was doing what I believe is my calling. I was doing what I believe makes a difference.”

'Fake interpreter' has criminal charge history


BAD SIGN: A man passing himself off as a sign language interpreter punches the air during a speech being given by India's President Pranab Mukherjee at a memorial service for late South African President Nelson Mandela.

The 'fake interpreter' for the deaf who caused a global scandal at Nelson Mandela's memorial service has a history of lying and fraud, and has previously faced rape and murder charges according to local media reports.

The Daily Dispatch reported that Thamsanqa Dyantyi was a compulsive liar who twice tried to register at high school and college using fake report cards.

Mr Dyantyi broke his silence on Thursday, denying he was a fake and saying he had suffered a schizophrenic episode.

The Dispatch tracked down his relatives and former teachers, reporting that he dropped out of primary school in 1997, and had previously tried to pass himself off as a doctor and a teacher.

A Justice Department official told the paper that Mr Dyantyi had previously been investigated for allegedly submitting false claims amounting to 1.5 million rand ($145,000).

He had also been accused of holding a court official hostage with a brick.

ENews Channel Africa reported that Mr Dyantyi, whom they called Jantjie, had also faced a murder charge in 2003, though it was not clear what had happened to the case.

They said he had also faced rape, theft, housebreaking and kidnapping charges - though many of those charges were dropped because he was mentally unfit to stand trial. He was acquitted on the rape charge but convicted for theft, the website reported.

South Africa's arts and culture minister Paul Mashatile apologised to the deaf community on Friday for the scandal.

"Without passing judgement, nobody should be allowed to undermine our languages," he said in a statement. 

"We sincerely apologise to the deaf community and to all South Africans for any offence that may have been suffered."

He promised that the government would regulate the sign language profession to prevent such an incident happening again.

Meanwhile, there was chaos in Pretoria as thousands flocked to their last chance to see Mandela lying in state.

More than 50,000 people have already viewed the body over the last two days. Tens of thousands more had joined the queue by 7.30am, local media reported.

Most who saw the body obeyed the family's request not to take a photo, however, one picture was circulating on social media.

A Mandela family spokesman said they had asked the government to investigate - though the government said it was a "distasteful" fake, not a genuine photograph.
