Parents of all children in Salaskóli in Kópavogi (Reykjavík) have been sent a letter in which they are warned of potential violence against red haired children on Friday. The root cause is a Facebook group that calls for violence against what they call "gingers". The principal says both students and parents have expressed a great concern regarding this.
The Facebook group in question calls itself "Kick a Ginger Day" or "Berjið rauðhærða-daginn." The day is all about beating up red haired people. Nearly 6 thousand people are registered to the group, including many Icelanders.
In the email Hafsteinn Karlsson, principal in Salaskóli writes to parents, he recalls that last year this day caused violence in schools in the United States and in Canada. He wants, by all means, avoid such travesty happening in this country and says in a conversation with the online news reporter Pressan.is "this must stop".
"The children have been talking about this and we intend to stop this filth along with the parents. This is nothing but violent bullying."
Hafsteinn says that many red haired students fear going to school on Friday.
