My mom had a Chinese one, my dad had a Russian one. I plan on buying one around my birthday.

Ah yes, the old reliable SKS. Great weapon for the untrained soldier.

There will be no problem with reliability (talking about Soviet versions) but comrades on the Russian gunforum strongly recommend to select SKS with the best accuracy of hits (to try several examples on the shooting-ground). They really differ (they recommend to select at least one from five ones). For example, all versions of AK (meaning Russian - Izhevsk) are similar in this sense. As far as I understood, there were some problems on the barrel line with SKS.My mom had a Chinese one, my dad had a Russian one. I plan on buying one around my birthday.

It may be worth looking at the Yugoslav models if one can be found. The quality *may* be better than on some of the Soviet versions and will almost certainly surpass the Chinese models.

Yugoslav SKS is great. I used it through my childhood often for shooting rabbits and pheasants. It is easy to maintain and you can get bullets in almost any houshold on Balkan. Absolutely no recoil and very precise. That were very important features for me cause before I had Winchester 30-30 and it almost blew my shoulder away.
