The AngloSaxon kingdoms were united several times previous to 1016 but none of those arrangements lasted long.
1016:
* 23rd April - King Ćthelred dies, and is succeeded by his son Edmund Ironside.
* May - Battle of Brentford: King Edmund defeats Knut.
* Knut besieges London.
* 18th October - Battle of Ashingdon: Knut defeats King Edmund, leaving the latter as king of Wessex only. They agree that whoever --outlives the other shall become king of all England.
* 30th November - King Edmund dies and Knut takes control of the whole country.
Ever since, England has been a united country so perhaps we should celebrate 30th November as England's national day. And it's coming up to the thousandth anniversary!
