You all missed the key words HE BELIEVES, there you have it, nothing to get excited about. He can believe what he wants to believe, makes no difference, reality is not gonna adjust to anyone's theories. Until we know for sure all of it is mental play.

Im too much of a lay person for this to matter

All I can say is that as a theoretical physicist myself ... I can't really grasp any meaning from his ideias anymore ( I've read the original paper ).

I'm afraid that to the general scientific community Stephen Hawking has become of little relevance.

I belive he's trying to salvage his first model of Black Holes where he stated them to be an example of a Classical Dynamical System , but that contradicted the conservation of information in physics, and ended being refutted by Lenny Susskind and became the base of his Holographic Principle which explained Hawking Radiation.

The thing is that the comparision between the weather forecast in Earth and the "possible loss of information" in Black Holes is quite tricky , since the reason is that the atmosphere is Chaotic in a classical sense and that definition doesn't apply do black holes, and there's no good definition on Quantum Chaos to make the transition.

What he is saying is more or less:

purposes we can consider it has such "
