Next I'm gonna search for English genetics on here. Always wonder there make up. Pre celtic, celtic/(briton?), Roman, Angl-Saxon, Norse, Norman (there Norse?) admixtures. I would assume different regions have different prominent groups.
go to this website, called Eupedia.com, look up their genetic maps. It should help

here's some Y-dna samples for England and the British Isles

The English are definitely a mixed Celtic-Germanic-Norse population and it varies from region to region. With a tint of pre-Celtic ancestry in there somewhere too.

The Norse actually attempted an invasion of Northumberland three weeks before Hastings.

Thanx for the history lesson. I know the basics but I forget the details. Now when I see things like Wessex Ill know it means West Saxons .

I read the first two books of The Saxon Stories by Bernard Cornwell. Interesting fiction but not enough for me to read all seven.

thats also one reason the English lost at Hasting, IMO.
They just battled the Norse, in the North of England at the Battle of Stamford Bridge and after winning, they had to rush down as fast as possible to defend themselves against the Normans landing. By that time they were tired and worn out , where as the Norman troops were re-freshed and battle ready, no to mention they had stirrups on their horses which made it easier for them to fight on horseback and the English fought mainly on foot.

I bought a $2 version of Beowulf (along with Aristotle Poetics) at a University and was thrown off by the Christianity which is funny because I'm kind of a Christian. I wanted the Heathen version damn it. Defiantly need to read it again.
