The Azores maintain some authentic musical traditions, such as the traditional chamarrita dance to a 3/4 rhythm traditionally played on the violin. This is a dance that has many versions and is done in a circle with a caller who calls out directions to the dancers. The cantares ao desafio is a fun tradition where two men, and more and more a man and a woman, take to an improvised poetic battle in song, have to be inspired and reply based on the verses of the other person. Fado has inroads in the Azores, too – being offered in some cites, and in special events. There are lot of local folklore groups, string bands, and music festivals.
