Threads is the most frightening nuclear war film I've ever seen. The Day After, however, did more to scare the snot of out of me than any of the others because I actually watched it the night it aired on network TV....1984. I was 17.

These films did their part in striking fear in the hearts of the masses during the Cold War Years.

There is a decent new series called The Americans which might be worth watching for those interested in aspects of The Cold War.
