The lockheed martin f-22 and f-35 are both considered to be failed projects because they are an attempt at combining a stealth air-to-ground fighter with a maneuverable air-to-air fighter. In short, it proved problematic. The sukhoi pak fa is no different, they're trying to combine the two elements from copying the design with a few changes.

Canada and Australia (as with many other allies) have both forfeited their purchases on the F-35 and have opted for the upgraded F18 (super hornets) from Boeing because they're more sound in dogfighting applications among other things.

The f35 was/is the most expensive military project ever in human history. It's also only single-engine.

A lot of times they just stole plans with spies, then make it almost exact same way, but they skimp on costs, cut on safety features, etc.
