A monument to Pope John Paul II will be unveiled in front of the Catholic Cathedral in Sarajevo on 30 April, the Archbishop of Sarajevo, Cardinal Vinko Puljic, and the head of the Croat Catholic association "Napredak", Franjo Topic, said in the Bosnian capital on Monday.
"We must not forget that man who struggled for peace in Bosnia and Herzegovina," Cardinal Puljic said at a news conference.
The dignitary thanked all who have supported this EUR 240,000 project, which also includes the reconstruction of the cathedral's stairs and facade.
"We must be peace champions like the deceased Pope John Paul II," Puljic said.
Tokic spoke about ecumenism promoted by Karol Jozef Woytyla as the 264th successor to the Apostle Peter.
He spoke about Bosnia and Herzegovina 263 times, and the Vatican recognised Bosnia and Herzegovina as an independent state two days after the country conducted its independence referendum in 1992, Tokic recalled.
The Blessed John Paul visited Bosnia and Herzegovina twice: he was in Sarajevo in April 1997 and in Banja Luka in June 2003.
