Alpine people have a wide diaspora, there is no fine line as where they are and are not. They can be found from Portugal to Russia. Southern French and Catalans don't look quite as distinct as those across the Danube, as people can often pass in both regions. Balkanites tend to look distinct for their ethnicity, and below the Danube there are the somewhat darker pigmented Jugoslav types, unlike Hungaryans and Romanians that are often light. Even as far as Germany those north of the river usually would not fit well in Switzerland for example.

    ^Nice map

Yeah, when I go and visit Northern Catalans I've always got the impression they're almost a different race.

I placed the Pyrenees along with the Alps and the Danube because it is one of the major natural frontiers between Northern and Southern Europe (contrary to what some people think, French and Spanish people - including Catalans - do NOT look alike).

Most if not all ethnic French people can pass as Spaniards, but a substantial minority of Spaniards - Gracile Meds and Berids principally - would not pass as ethnic French (at least not very easily).

You're comparing Murcians and Normans. I'm talking about the real "border", the Catalan-Languedoc continuum. There's no sharp Pyrenean border. Mainly because, among other reasons, the Pyrenees are only a natural bareer in their central Aragonese part, where they are massive.

I know what you mean, but even in Catalonia there are faces that would be rare-to-non-existent among the ethnic French, such as Xavi Hernandez and Cesar Fabregas, be it due to inward migration from other Spanish regions or anything else. Anyway, I'm merely playing devil's advocate here - the thread does genuinely ask which out of the three natural barriers listed is the most significant.
