What does Hispanic mean to you???

Hispanic means a person of Spanish language or culture to me. However, here in America, it is normally used to mean mestizo and trying to correct everyone who misuses it in this way is a losing battle.

I agree, it's basically a Spanish speaker, regardless of race. And you are right, it's an uphill battle in the U.S. to get people to understand it doesn't mean a race of mestizos. But no battles are ever won if there is never a fight. So I will continue to spread the word. I've done plenty of it over the years and it catches on with people little by little. On youtube, there are many "Hispanic is not a race" videos, and with this sort of information highway, with time and spreading of the word, it could help to change this incorrect mess inside the U.S..

You aren't a Hispanic American. Hispanoamericano is the equivalent in Spanish, if you don't know. And that term excludes Spaniards. Thanks.

Now that Comte brings it up, Spaniards would be Hispanic, but excluded from "Hispanic American". But I think Spanish Americans would be included in "Hispanic American", as we are Hispanics born in the Americas.

what about people such as myself, a U.S. born "Spaniard"? Should I be seen as "Hispanic American" or just "Hispanic" to distinguish from mestizos?
