Yes Sochi was the capital of the Circassians, after the Russian conquest of the region it became part of the Russian empire. Most of the locals were deported or left, those who stayed became a minority and to even degree had to convert to Christianity. This why Circassians see the cross as symbol of oppression. Also this why there was massive protest from Circassians across the world when Sochi was nominated for the 2014 Olmypics. Sochi to Circassians is scared land and they wish it one day returns to them, the name itself is not even Slavic or Russian for that matter.

Sochi today is a ghost town. Its really an impoverished place the Russians just walled off half the city and then made a copy and paste nice area of the city. Most of the work is still in complete there from pictures I have seen.

Why don't they just immigrate back there? I would. It would seem the infrastructure there is not very good. I have read reports about the place and the Russians sot of let it go. Of course during and before the Olympics they rushed to make it look classy but closed off regions of the city that were really impoverished so tourists did not see it. Journalists from America took note of it and the regions history. It seems like a sad place despite what I saw on television. Wild dogs everywhere, impoverished people, bad infrastructure, etc....... It could be a nice place but it needs alot of construction work and improvements from what I have read. Maybe Circassians should return and turn it into a resort place to make money off of it and fix it up a bit. I am sure they would do fine.

Sochi was actually quite a sophisticated city before the Russian invasion which laid it to ruins. Not mention Mosques and pagan temples were plundered.
