    Celtic names have more variation. For example McDonald would be second in list if added together with MacDonald, Donaldson plus a few more.

    And there are actual Scots names that you probably thought were English when they are pretty much Scots. For example Robertson, Anderson, Thomson, Campbell, Stewart in top ten aren't English at all, as in not found in England.

    Maybe it was just too much of a mouthful?

    My guess is that it went Andrewson -> Andrison -> Anderson
