I think Romanian is more lexically divergent than Picard. This being said, modern French, due to XVIth century relexicalization, is among the most Latin of the Romance languages.
We're such special snowflakes. But it was a good thing in the long term. Having a bastard language forced us to come forward and actively pursue literary greatness, rather than simply imitating Latin motives.
Plus now French is a very distinctive language, unlike anything else.
They came via Germany (although "Germany" itself might be anachronistic in the context), not from it.
