Latin, Ancient Greek, Hitite, etc... are far from dead to you. You have a firm grasp on phonological processes and philology. You memorize etymology texts in your free time. The Brothers Grimm are so much more to you than fairy tale writers, and you can explain every spelling discrepancy for both English and French. You are social, but mostly with illuminated texts and Shakespeare. You are SO over current trends and know that modern technology is only good for improving our understanding of the past.

I guess that means you would be good at philology, which I believe is the study of language through historical texts.

Many famous writers have been philologists.

Form always follows function for you. You see order in every language and no problem have of other languages' grammars with (suffix marker). You have a strong understanding of morphology. You enjoy being social, but always catch yourself analyzing how different people mesh together like verb and object phrases.

    True, actually

Hardly surprising since I'm seriously considering getting into historical linguistics / Romance philology if I ever get back into a university again.

Which one would you say it's the best at it, worldwide speaking?

Can't say precisely, but these days Italy seems like the place to be. Germany also has a big philological tradition.

In France the best places might be the École des Chartes or Normale sup', but here we tend to mix all of the "humanities".

Yeah. In most places, universities tend to mix all humanities, or you see professors only mastering one of the major languages, no real Romanists.

It's somewhat shameful but only right to admit that Romanistics have been better treated by Germany than by the Romance countries. I myself had to improve my German only to read some books/articles about the Romance languages that were not translated. :/
