Which countries do Irish people wish Ireland was more like?
Ipsos MRBI asked 500 Irish people which European countries they fancied.

THE GRASS IS always greener on the other side, and Irish people have their eye on that grass.

Market research agency Ipsos MRBI did some poking around ahead of the Eurovision and European elections, and found out which countries Irish people would like Ireland to emulate – measuring our “Euro envy” if you will.

Around 500 Irish people were asked to look at a list of European countries and point out which one they would like Ireland to emulate.

    The answers are very interesting.

Germany is on the minds of 19% of Irish people, while 15% think Ireland should be more like Sweden. A controversial 10% wish the Emerald Isle was more like the UK.

Here’s the sad part – in same survey conducted across the 11 other European countries, only 1% said they would like their country to be more like Ireland.

Here’s the full list of countries Ireland should be more like, in order:
    Germany (19%)
    Sweden (15%)
    United Kingdom (10%)
    Netherlands (6%)
    Denmark (4%)
    France, Spain (3%)
    Italy, Austria, Finland, Luxembourg (2%)
Poland, Romania, Slovakia, Slovenia, Greece, Malta, Portugal, Belgium, Cyprus (1%)

I bet almost any nation would want to be more like Germany with this economy.

I guess Germany isn't surprising, though the 1% for Greece is a little- maybe people want Ireland to emulate its weather. If Ireland's economy was stronger I expect more people in the other countries would have voted for Ireland. I'd vote Sweden or Denmark (or Norway if it was an option). Though I can see Germany is admirable economically, I've always had a bit of a thing for the nordic countries. My mum has too and lived in Sweden when she was younger, so it's probably rubbed off on me. They come across as 'nice' countries, and have good standards of living. I also like smaller countries, though obviously we couldn't exactly emulate that without mass murder.

I like the Irish people for being themselves and I think the vast majority of Irish people are happy with having their own unique identity and are proud to be Irish.

I guess when some random people in Ireland were asked to name other countries in Europe that they'd like to be like, they probably had economic aspirations on their mind, rather than wanting to be culture.

I like Irish culture including their music, castles, literature, films, beautiful landscape (reminds me of the West Country where I grew up,) their gsoh, their food, their soda bread, their stone cottages and ancient stone circles, their kindness and genorisity, their humanity, the lilt in their voices, their rebellious hearts, and their rhotic accents.

On the downside now... (apart from them drinking too much like the Brits,) there needs to be significant economic improvements in the Republic of Eire, but I think their situation will improve for them when they leave the EU.

Also there was a severe crisis in the Rep.of Eire regarding the amount of children who were raped and beaten in the abusive Catholic churches there and who were left severely traumatised by it. I can't stand the Vatican and I loathe the Catholic church organisation.

The economic situation was shown as being so bad a few years ago that some Irish people were crossing over the border to find work in Northern Ireland, while others were shown leaving the country and moving to Australia to find work and homes.

The Irish fought for years for to become an independent nation from the UK... and then they handed themselves over to the EU government's control to become a state of Europe instead.

Several years ago I asked my close Irish friend who lives in London why the Irish allow foreign unelected Eurocrats to make most of their laws in Brussels, and he was also perplexed by it.

I mean, they wanted the British out of Éire, and now they let every other foreign person on the planet move there, and they let their country be governed by unelected foreign dictators in Brussels.

Ireland should be confederate part of The United Kingdom. It's culture is that of British isles.

No, they'd be better off as being independent as forced unions always leads to dictatorships and greed, like with the EU.
