I think we should blame Hungarians and Romanians for this division in linguist intelligibility between South Slavs and the other Slavs. I guess Serbo-Croatian and Slovenian would also sound unintelligible to you? But not to the same extent as Macedono-Bulgarian?

Other Slavs seem utterly incpapable of grasping the concept of article, leading to such comical statements as: аз, това чадър, не съм носил от малкото дете. The number of verb tenses in Macedono-Bulgarian is also far higher than in the rest of the Slavic languages.
